Depends how bad it gets. At worst case and at 4 months - no, not without laying off the vast majority of the workforce.

I've never known anything like this in my lifetime. It's like we are asking businesses to just become dormant for 3-4 months!

The hospitality and entertainment business is up in arms.

As the Govt ‘advice’ for people to stay away from pubs, clubs and theatres isn’t a mandated ban.

So therefore their insurance won’t cover them for cancellations / closures.

I’d like to believe this is an oversight, however the cynic in me thinks that it probably isn’t.

 

The economic effect is the thing to really worry about. Its going to be a really rocky time for a lot of businesses.

The expectation is the peak in 12 weeks with another 10-12 weeks of dealing with it still beyond that. That’s potentially 6 months of disruption which a lot of businesses are going to struggle to cope with. And each business that tanks will have a knock on effect to other businesses and people.

The government and banks need to come up with some serious measures to cope with this.

I think I'm with you of sorts in that businesses will become dormant for a 3-4 month period, however, even if they manage to survive the dormancy then you have the same again for a recovery period, because those dormant businesses will not have paid their employees wages, so people will have no money to spend to boost the economy recovery again. Unless the government kick start the economy with free handouts!

 

To be fair the foreign office have been very quick to change travel advice when countries have put measures in place which then entitled people to refunds.

I’d hope the government will be as quick to make decisions in relation to businesses, though the jury is still out! I bet it’ll be fast changes to measures put in place now. Not long until full lockdown I wouldn’t think.

 

Just got a message from one of my GP friends. He's by nature a cynic and he was dismissive of the virus when it first hit the news (so was I, partly because he said it was nothing to worry about). His message was very emotional, wishing us all the best, saying it's going to be a long haul and will impact our lives massively and we should call whenever we needed medical advice. It's taken me by surprise as it's so out of character for him but he's in the front line and he'll be hearing and seeing stuff that we aren't party to.

 

Many won’t be able to ride this out, it’s truly grim. I’ve lived through some extreme times in business, recession / the crash etc. But this is something else altogether.

Literally millions will be laid off if we’re in either a full or partial lockdown for an extended period. So the worries about people being able to survive on SSP for a fortnight, are rapidly going to become moot. At least we have a fantastic Universal Credit system to make sure those in need get the help they need rapidly.........oh wait.

 

Just did the shop for my dad. Expected the usual missing bog rolls, kitchen rolls, pasta but discovered there's no eggs, no bread, no frozen chips

At which point I started walking around the aisles saying "bloody animals!" out loud... often at random strangers.

Those fckers know who they are even if I don't.
