A lot of posters criticise Phil Parkinson about his lack of substitutions or how late they are made , yesterday I was a bit baffled by his changes , Gillingham were playing with three big lads up front and were creating us quite a few problems. First change he took off Ozturk who fights for every ball and battles - brought on Semenyo who I think adds something to the team with his skill and speed but I think to take off Ozturk weakened our defence . Second change took off Maguire a couple of minutes after we went 2-1 up replaced by Scowen , Maguire is good at ball retention , probably the best in the team - give him the ball and he tends to be able to look after it as the game entered the closing stages . Third change Hume off Lynch on another change to our defensive set up , whether their was a sudden realisation that Gillingham were throwing everything at us and were using long throws and going long at every opportunity , all of the defensive changes I feel confused the players and led to us conceding what could prove to be a crucial goal . A settled side was chopped and changed and altered our style of play .
I don't know why Ozturk was taken off weakening the back line and replaced with a forward. Semenyo for Gooch would have seemed more logical IMO
Don't normally knock the manager but I agree with you entirely here. I reckon he tried to shore up the midfield but got it wrong and it cost us a couple of points. Might work next time but that's why he is paid the big bucks
Didn't taking off Ozturk change it to a back four, so that out defensive line weren't matched up one on one with their three forwards?
We were playing at home with 10 minutes to go and chasing the win. He took off a defender (Ozturk) and replaced him with a forward (Semenyo). That’s exactly the kind of attacking substitution I want to see from Parky when we aren’t winning games.
I wouldn't have taken off Ozturk because he's our most important CB for me but it was the right idea to make changes. I'd have gone like for like and done it earlier.
Agree with the attacking substitutions but I would have had Dunc on instead of Scowen. Dunc n semi with pace taking the ball down into the corners to run the clock down.
I agree bring on an attacking player but not take off a big , strong , and determined defender like Ozturk faced with three big lads up front for Gillingham I think later Parkinson realised his error and put on Lynch who does not have Ozturks determination but it still cost us two points .
We scored to take the lead just a few minutes after the Ozturk substitution. Once we had taken the lead he then replaced Maguire with Scowen to make us tight and defensive. All the substitutions made sense to me.
I’m not a fan of Watmore, mate. He’s living off hype and expectation. He has no impact on games. I’d rather he had taken off Gooch instead of Maguire. Maguire is the one player who can hold onto the ball for ya at the death.
It was the amount of disruption to the defence that was wrong , as I said in my original post Maguire keeps the ball well Scowen coming on was not needed as midfield was being bypassed by Gillingham the sensible out ball was Maguire.
Substitutions are strange entities .... ... works and you're a genius, fails and you're a clown. The margin between the two is wafer thin.
Neither am I. He would have done a job as a 10 min impact sub imo though. Rather than trying to hang on. Any corners either him or Semi should have been on the half way like in the event we cleared a corner. McLaughlin did catch one and Gucchi was in no mans land between the 18yd box and the half way line. Why? What good is standing there?
Think you had a problem with you receiving internet , normally respect your views but in all honesty we could have lost that game due to the changes , the three big lads caused us so many problems after Ozturk went off , Jon McLaughlin making some excellent saves . I have supported Phil Parkinson but on this occasion I think he got it wrong , apparently all week he had told the players about the aerial threats that Gillingham had yet he took off Ozturk who is aggressive, brave , and is not easily pushed around . Taking off Maguire who is a good ball minder after we took the lead and the best out ball we have was also removed , I questioned it at the time and we concluded Tuesdays match but we were already under pressure to win on the day ,what difference would have it made in the remaining 10 -12 minutes = poor game management .
Can never understand why managers sometimes don't leave a man up front on corners. If everyone is back there's no outlet for a quick throw or kick out to try and catch the opposition on the back foot
Totally agree particularly with someone like Gooch who is not really going to help from a defensive context but would pose problems to opponents due to his speed on the break and can be difficult to knock off the ball legitamently , actually mentioned it on Saturday .
I turned to my mate and said " my word this fella is hoying some big buggers on now" as the their subs come on. Taking Ozturk off was baffling. Ozturk is certainly marmite mind.
Might be marmite but the type you would want alongside you in the trenches , when the going gets tough he would not shirk a challenge .
I like marmite on my cream crackers. I watched him last season in the checktrade ties and was really surprised at the amount of game time he was given in the first team. How the likes of Baldwin ( a Salford player now) could get the nod over him I have no idea.
seems to not like making changes, leaves any subs till very late in the game usually...ozturk isa no nonsense defender who gets stuck in and will hoof the ball away into the stands to gain time to organise, not everyones cup of tea as many prefer a defender to play the ball out to a team mate, but for holding on when the kitchen sink is coming at you, the perfect man to have in there.
