People shouldn't be allowed to drive when they are no longer competent.
You can punish or re-educate drivers who choose to break the law or take risks - if anyone can be bothered to police them.
You can't make an old person competent when their faculties are impaired to such an intent that they are not fit to drive.
The comparison to be made is not with legal age drivers, but with young children, who we don't allow to drive for similar reasons.

For me, the issue is not that a member of the judiciary is prepared to give such a sentence to an 86 year old, rather that it's too rare to see meaningful custodial sentences for serious driving offences causing death or serious injury.

If you want to kill someone, run them over...there's a decent chance that you'll end up serving no time at all.

It many ways it was.
United gained a lot of sympathy and support as a result. Then Busby rebuilt the team quickly and Utd won the European Cup with Best, Law & Charlton. That established Itd as the best supported club with a fan base across the UK and around the world.
 
Exactly.They gained much sympathy and it stuck. They were even given a couple of players by the league to help them out and they got to the Cup Final with them and the sympathy,before losing to Nat Lofthouse.

Spurs never got sympathy.They just went about their business and won things....even after the John White thing and Mackay's leg!

I think the first time I was really aware of Munich was around 25 years after the event.
It seemed so shocking to learn that players had died - many of them among the top players of that time. To a child, events of 25 years ago is ancient history; but this did resonate. As you get older, you realise 25 years is no time so those events were still fresh in the memories of many.
It's still shocking now 62 years on. Whilst there have been other disasters in football, there have been few in English football that have involved the death of players. And no leading side has been decimated in this way. You think of footballers as being invincible and immortal - they have youth, health and fitness.

I think many United players were thinking about walking home before the final take off. I believe the crew made several attempts......and I'm not sure if they did de iceing in those days. Probably not!

Everything changes it's name in government all the time. It's their way of wiping out history. I know what it's called I still file tax returns but inland revenue is what it has been called for most of my life and yes of course that's to do with my age, but I don't buy double think or ministry of truth rubbish Inland Revenue is what it is Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs Really? Bullshit!
 
Am I wrong here? We get a break and then we play on a Sunday then a CL game 2 days later(Tuesday).Why couldn't they play the PL game on the Saturday or even Friday,giving the team a longer break?
 
I did have a Daily Mirror reporting the Munich crash until recently. I sent it to a Kosovan Man U fan in Norway. Maybe I should have sent it to Bobby Charlton...!?

Interesting sentence. Been hearing a lot about similar offences of course since Anne Sacoolas absconded from justice, with many comments suggesting that she would not have received a custodial time had she stayed.

But she had diplomatic immunity! Except she didn't and neither did her husband.
