This will only get worse, the Tories have been cutting for over a decade, just look at the NHS ambulance times, 7 hours the other night, and there are 100,000 vacancies within the NHS to fill, all this at a time when the population is getting older and living longer, but unfortunately most of the aged have complicated health issues from western culture and diet, that costs the NHS for their health care, take for example obese patients, that currently Costs the NHS £5.1billion, if you add in diabetes then you are up to £16 Billion, just for these two lifestyle issues, you would think that with all this cost, that politicians would be rushing to get out a sugar tax, but logic these days is a mystery, I fully expect these issues to hit critical mass in just a few years.

My message to my friends and contemporaries is, stay healthy and fit in your approaching old age, because health care is crumbling, and if you think you can beat the NHS issues by going private, well you will find the waiting times not far behind the NHS.

Whilst not wishing to defend the Tories - indeed, I agree with much of what you’ve written - the link related to Wales and the Welsh Labour Government ‘starting’ the debate on funding care by raising income tax in Wales to cover the cost of caring for elderly and disabled people.

In truth, the NHS in Wales - run by Labour - is no better, possibly even worse than in England.

Labour always tries to dodge the bullet re their poor management by pointing at the lack of central funding from Westminster - seems they crave control but not the responsibility that goes with it.

I certainly empathise with Matt and his family - we are paying £900/w for my 99 year old MiL.
