Son went in from behind with no chance of winning the ball. It was tactical assault. The fact he only meant to hurt him a little bit and hurt him a lot isn't a defence.
The problem with off the ball challenges is there's no ball to take some of the impact. The problem with cowardly slides from behind is there's no chance to see it coming.

It’s ridiculous. Just about every firm tackle ever made potentially endangers the other player - or even the tackler for that matter. What Son did was stupid, but it was not malicious or reckless. I feel sorry for Gomes, but no way is that ever a red card offence.
