I loved EL games! Mainly once the club agreed to the whole '1882 movement', cheap tickets and a section for fans who just wanted to sing and have a laugh together. Was one of the best things the club done and although the stadium never really filled out unless it was against a top side, I do feel it increased attendance a little as people were going for a good night out and a sing along, more so than being interested in the football match against Azerbaijani plumbers
We never missed any EL matches. Saw some great games...and sights. Kane in Goal, Dsrren Bent having s good game, THAT Lamela goal and those advertisers running on the pitch sll immediately spring to mind
The game against Lyon was a highlight too. Umtiti scored one of the best goals I’ve ever seen in my life but then Bale decided to smack two world class free kicks in and win us the game. Each of those goals would’ve been worth the ticket price but to get all three in one game was just spoiling us.
There is an elasticity of demand though, not maximising income if you antagonise the fan base and leave empty seats.
...and then we needed a late thunderbastard from Dembele in the second leg to go through AVB never did get the hang of second legs, did he?
Thanks to the Europa and Lyon we got to see the original Moussa score a goal I don't mind the Europa...but I don't see the point in wasting our time if the hierarchy think they are above it. Not being funny but I'd happily sack the league off and go all out for a Euro trophy because we aren't challenging for the league any time soon. On the other hand id like to see if we can take advantage of a season out of Europe...like most teams do in England and bring us some domestic success and another real push for the title.
The attendance for Red Star was higher than that of the similar matches at Wembley in the last two seasons. I'm not sure of the prices for those. I imagine they will review prices for Olympiacos
They haven't...the Olympiakos tickets were the same price. Even if they had reviewed the price it would be an acknowledgement that they have over priced. The club were warned anout this happening by the TH Supporters Trust when the draw was made ... they suggested that a high percentage of the tickets for the group games should have been sold as a package like they were 3 years ago. We got 47,000 for the PSV and 58,000 for Milan match last season when fans were fed up of wembley. The previous year we got 67,000 v Dortmund and 48,000 v Apoel when we had already qualified for the last 16. So I do not think your comparisons hold water as : A) No one is sick of our ground as they were with Wembley and B) Our qualification for the last 16 is far from assured. In 2016 when we flopped in the CL our attendances were...85,000, 85,000 and 62,000 and we were already out of the CL when we got 62,000. The main difference? You could buy all 3 tickets for £75.
I agree with you that the club should have sold the matches as a package, but in that CL season we had nearly 90k tickets to shift and only 20k season ticket holders. The situation is different now so I don't think they could go to £25 per match.
