Squad news: Salah returns but Matip and Trent to miss Genk trip

Mohamed Salah returns to the Liverpool squad for Wednesday's Champions League clash with Genk, but Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joel Matip are set to miss out.

Salah takes his place among the 19 travelling players who departed John Lennon Airport on Tuesday afternoon for Belgium after missing Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Manchester United.

However, Alexander-Arnold remains on Merseyside due to a virus, as does Matip, who has a sore knee.

Liverpool squad: Alisson, Fabinho, Van Dijk, Wijnaldum, Lovren, Milner, Keita, Firmino, Mane, Salah, Gomez, Adrian, Henderson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lallana, Brewster, Robertson, Origi, Kelleher.

After a win and a defeat in Group E so far, Jürgen Klopp’s side face the Belgian title-holders away from home in the first of back-to-back meetings between the clubs.

Liverpool trained at Melwood on Tuesday afternoon before flying to Belgium for Wednesday’s 8pm BST kick-off at KRC Genk Arena.

With no Trent, we need a creative spark in midfield. Keita and/or Ox have to start.

I imagine Gomez will fill in there. Keita and AOC to start would be good though.

Gomez likely to start but he has zero creativity in that position.

Just making the runs is enough to free up space at times. We should be ok.

My fear is that, Klopp is going to prefer Lovren to Gomez.

    Genk v Liverpool: Team news

Liverpool must make at least two changes for Wednesday night's Champions League tie with Belgian title-holders Genk.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (virus) and Joel Matip (knee) were not part of the 19-man travelling squad for the Reds’ third match in Group E.

Jürgen Klopp will therefore have to alter the back four that began the 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend.

The boss has been boosted by the return of Mohamed Salah, however, after he was not involved on Sunday.

The Egypt international was named in the squad for the 8pm BST kick-off and his potential availability was described as 'promising' by the manager.

"We have to wait [to see] how he reacts overnight," said Klopp. "We will not go [for] any risk. [On Tuesday] it looked really good, that was important."

Xherdan Shaqiri remains unavailable, Nathaniel Clyne is a long-term absentee, and Ki-Jana Hoever has departed for the FIFA U17 World Cup with the Netherlands.

On the possibility of changes, Klopp said: "We have to change two positions already with Joel and Trent anyway, then let's see what we can do on top of that.

"But it's never [just] for changing, it's always for being best prepared for the next opponent – and that's Genk.

"We wanted to find a team, and I think we found it, which can make life uncomfortable for Genk, that's a very important part of the game."

The two are not mutually exclusive.

There are a thousand jokes I could make about that if I were a fan of a rival team... <laugh>

You just gave them a perfect opener.

No Gomez, he is on the bench. Milner as right back, probably as he is better going forward.

I'd like to be confident, and I am.... But there is that little nagging doubt in my left anus that reminds me that this is away...in Europe...
