Our demands for cheap clothes, electrical goods, foods etc drives this trade in child labour, and yes the slave drivers are partly responsible too.

Of course they are partly responsible.

Consumers have been drip fed a diet of cheap clothes, food, products etc and been told that 'market forces' determine the thrust to drive down prices. The 'cheap' products have hidden costs elsewhere in the production and supply chain though. Much of it child and slave labour and dangerous working conditions.

Haven't read the last few pages, so apologies if I've missed anything but genuine question...

When we import cheap clothes, most retailers regardless of price, from cheap to expensive, will import from the same countries, however, how do we know as consumers what the labour get paid for their product we buy?

By that I mean, just because something is expensive, does not mean that the labour gets paid more, as that would depend on the commercial advertising outgoings and many other equasions of that retailer. I assume.

Second part of the question, is there a list somewhere that consumers can obtain, to evidence what retailers pay the manufacturer and what they in turn pay their workforce?

In the UK we banned child Labour in the 1800s because it's inhumane and cruel .

We treat the actual slave drivers as criminals not the consumer .

We could do the right thing and stop funding these unscrupulous people but cutting the money probably won't benefit the children working to feed themselves.

There are plenty of super rich Indians but they clearly don't give a **** about starving children , partly because they see them as inferior.

You're right, just because something is expensive in the UK, it doesn't mean it costs more to manufacture than the cheaper items. Most of that added cost comes down to the way it's marketed, advertised, packaged and sold as a 'premium' product. Loads of stuff is made in the same factories, to the same spec and then simply rebranded when it comes into the European markets. So I would expect that whether it's a Gucci handbag or a bag destined for Primark, the labour costs are probably very similar.

Not sure about a list for consumers, but there's plenty of info on the Western companies that use child/cheap labour out there

The U.K. government could increase taxes on the rich companies that exploit child labour and add the extra proceeds to the foreign aid pot.

 

Like you said, is it the fault of the consumer for buying these products, or the companies the drive this demand for cheap goods in the first place ?

 

You could probably be reasonably sure that most of us, have purchased something relating to one of those companies listed at some point in time. In fact I'd probably say it's pretty much a certain.

All the public would have to do in the global economy is refuse to buy from those companies, but we all know that will never happen, so really everyone of us exploits children in some way. Yet those companies listed, make the biggest profits in the world. That's your problem with a global market, exploitation.
