Second race at Southwell. Lots near the head of the market have negative sire win ratios on the surface, and therefore I think we've got a race that we can exploit with the market angle. The obvious sire is Mayson here, but his horse seems to be very poor (56 which looks about 50 to many on bare form) and therefore we need to dig a bit deeper. Sunset Breeze is a positive, but first time out for Sir Mark over a sprint trip? I'd say we need to watch the market on that one. The 12s currently could look very good, but could go off at 25/1 too!! Raven's Pass' are doing ok on the surface so Brenner Pass is one for the list. He is drawn wider than ideal so that tempers enthuisasm but I think at 16/1 he is worth a second look. Sunset Breeze and Brenner Pass are ones to take a second look at when the market truly forms in the morning.
Baby Steps @ 15/2 ew, Pontefract 15.25. A very gutsy run for a 3 year old lto at Chester from an impossible draw. Was at it all the way, trapped wide but still finished off his race well in 3rd half a length of the winner. If he shows the same determination tomorrow from a better draw and off the same mark he should go very close. Good luck all.
IDEAL DESTINY 7;15 Southwell 16/1 Chased home a couple of experienced rivals on debut at Newcastle and a repeat of that would see her bang in contention here. She is entitled to come on for the run and the yard is in fine form at present. Very interesting runner.
Bolger runs a couple of interesting New Approach 2yos at Gowran, the full sister to Dawn Approach in the first division and McCabe in the second, McCabe looks the more likely to me from a good draw and having an interest at 14/1. Also like Discovery Island 5/2 in the first at Newmarket, he was used early to get across from a wide draw last time and he still looked awkward and green round the bend. The favourite for todays race looked promising when finishing 3rd in the same race but he had a decent run round the inside and its a different set up today. Discovery Island returns to the straight course where he made a very promising debut, only beaten a head by one who went on to run 2nd in the Ascendant, first 3 were well clear. Buick and Appleby have a great record in these events and I expect him to be very hard to beat with a likely much easier time on the front end. Hes my bet of the day.
The 3.00 at hq looks a nice race. Plenty with chances but I’m going with gale force maya. Was caught late on last time by today’s current fave but better at the weights. Expecting the ground to be softer than advertised. Cheers.
Morning, troops. Couple of A-Listers out today in Withhold (4.10 Newmarket) and Wholestone (3.10 Perth). Not backing either, due to the prohibitive odds, but will be fascinating to see how they fare. The former has his first go at Listed level and this is surely a ‘sighter’ re the Cup races next term whilst the latter, a very decent staying hurdler, has his first attempt at the big ‘uns – connections have though left it somewhat late to switch him being almost 9 and having his 24th race in the NH sphere. This is a heat though that the barn target having won 5 out of the last 9 renewals. Good luck to those speculating.
The old rogue also owns that Sunset Breeze. Is this another for the system which operates along the lines of have them trained to the minute and ready to run for their lives first time up before selling them to an existing owner in the yard for mega money?!? Makes you wonder. I would guess Brener Pass was running for nothing more than a mark. Could be wrong, though.
Anyone doing the double today given the current political climate we're in?? 4:35 Ponte - Bringitonboris 33/1 5:15 Southwell - Big Boris 5/2
I suspect if either win there will be an objection from the runner up leading to a lengthy stewards enquiry
Perth didn't have many runners to start with - now there are 10 non-runners to boot. Old girl Mother Nature having some effect.
