It's never going to happen that both these run chases come off, but in the amazing world where they do, we can't have Middlesex chase it too easily - because they only need to a slight turnaround in NRR between the two of us. Kent have started well in their own run chase too.
Well that was embarrassing. Highest run chase in Blast history and they do it with 3 overs to spare! Bowlers all off form tonight, but fair play to the Middlesex batters, especially Morgan. Not sure that plastic pitch is necessarily a good idea!
Hampshire really blew this opportunity. Really poor bowling. Even the last over from Wood - if that had been decent we'd have been on target in the run chase.
Essex and Middlesex go through then. Didn't see that coming. Kent will be mightily pissed after their start to the tournament.
So as it turns out, a failure to get that one extra run against Essex has knocked us out. Turn that tie into a win, and we'd have gone through on NRR ahead of Kent (by just 0.02) and Essex.
Ah well, a season that promised so much has ended with just a failed day out at Lords. I hold much hope for next season now though as surely Vincey won't get selected by England again and we have at least found an Opener or two. And we will be in Div One again...
Indeed. Will be very hard to do next season though (or at least in terms of anyone with quality). As I understand it, next season will revert back to t20s being almost exclusively on Friday nights only, played across the season alongside the County Championship from Sunday to Wednesday. (The 100 is naturally taking the peak Summer slot which the t20 currently has, and no-one wants a month of t20 in the freezing cold of April or May. Hence no opportunity for a block of t20.) How many overseas player will want to either come over for three months, but then spend six days a weeks twiddling their thumbs, or spend those three months jumping on and off a plane?
The really annoying thing is that Somerset finished with a better NRR than anyone apart from Lancashire and Sussex, but rank bad bowling let us down tonight.
