Matthew Henry BBC Sport at Headingley There’s a young girl who has given up and is watching Mickey Mouse on an iPad at the back of the new stand. A bit more of this and a few more might join her.
I am really lost for words what is happening at Headingley, the art of Test batting seems to have been lost. I think the amount of shorter form of the game the players are playing now, has really created what we are seeing out there. Also, is the captaincy affecting Root's batting, it appears to be? England's bowlers must be knackered, they are just not getting enough rest between innings.
gordon bennett. well, i've paid my last visit to a test match. and now i'm trying to recall whether my visit to headingley about 38 years ago was for a test or a yorkshire game.
The trouble is they have to pay ECB to stage the match and its expensive I never realised it was that price until I got there yesterday and paid for the ticket . Last time I paid £35
Can any of you Original Oak or Skyrack (Shire Oak) lot remember if they were captive Brewery Pubs or free houses in your time ? Any one go to the Chippy round the corner on Chapel Lane after closing ? My best mate & his missus (RIP Joan) owned the place. Mark Knopfler used to go in there after his band (pre-Dire Straits) finished their gig (sometimes in the Oak).
After my time there methinks - where is it in relation to the Oak or Skyrack ? Just Googled it - Bennett Rd, a few minutes away. Must be new ( well since '72 I mean), as I don't remember a pub down there.
Is it on the way from Skyrack back to the stadium? More recently I believe we enjoyed a few hours there while it was raining, I suspect it was the notorious Pieterson test vs Sth Africa? Denis?
I think it had become a cheap curry 'restaraunt by the early eighties? We did a few runners from there, but later read it was done for using Alsatian meat, so probably honours even?
Skyrack probably shaded it when we lived there.Over the last six years or so, the lads I lived with have had an annual reunion, and it seems to change every time I go in. All bright machines and flashing lights, wooden floors etc. Whereas the Oak is just timeless.
I think Root's batting has gone downhill because he doesn't like coming in when the ball's only 2 or 3 overs old.
