Both on paper and in practice I would say McClaren is a significantly worse manager than Bruce but got blessed with far better jobs at the beginning of his career.

I think Chris Hughton is an excellent manager, but he gets hired by financial struggling clubs almost exclusively. I think here with us, he did a fantastic job considering his budget. I honestly view Steve Bruce as almost the same, he has consistently managed struggling sides but consistently achieved the targets he was expected. I would even go as far to say that at Sunderland he over achieved and signed some good players. Sheffield Wednesday fully expected Bruce to get them promoted, despite the fact they were near the bottom of the table when he signed on.

I'm not trying to blow smoke up his ass and say he's the best manager in the league, not at all anything like that, but I do believe he is competent enough to keep us in the premier league if he has players capable of achieving that. I even believe if he had a considerably weaker side and we were relegation favorites he'd be a good choice of manager to fight and keep us up.
