On Sky, talk about Southampton saying that Forster/McCarthy available for sale...suggestion that Liverpool and Villa interested in McCarthy. Also said Gallagher and Austin are available but only at the right price. All of this is old news to us, but perhaps it means the club are putting it out there formally.

Villa ought to get a loyalty card if all the rumours are to be believed.

I'd be more than happy to cash in on McCarthy (with English sub keepers quite desirable given the home grown rules) and sell Forster on the cheap (free up wages) - go with Gunn and a cheapish backup and use the money to boost elsewhere.

What is it about Saints and goalkeepers these days? We get them in as really promising potential, or already pretty good. Then they have a couple of seasons where their form becomes spectacular, and they get picked for England squads. Then they have a sudden drop in form and they are considered transfer fodder. I don't get it. They're still the same people, with the same level of consistent performance inside them. What has changed?

Swear Forster is the only one this has happened to?
McCarthy was a sub keeper when we bought him and he has grown his stock since we bought him.

And Fraser clearly had personal confidence issues not helped by certain sections of SMS during matches. McCarthy is still the same GK but has been superseded by Angus.

I also think that Fraser was already around the fringes of the England squad when we signed him from Celtic.

all 3 of our keepers have been good signings - I don't think many would argue otherwise. Ralf just has to now make the best decisions for 2019 and for me that's keeping Gunn, moving the others and investing elsewhere.

Forster, I can understand why people might want to move him along. He probably needs a fresh start anyway. But why has McCarthy suddenly become not good enough?

It's not that I don't feel he's good enough at all. It's more that you can only have 11 players on the pitch and he is someone outside of the playing eleven that would command a good fee and who's role in the squad could likely be replaced fairly cheaply.

He's been a good signing and has played well for us. Understand why some people may have a different view and prefer to keep him - depends on the fee I suppose.

Similar to the Matt Targett situation, It might be the player himself that feels that he is too good to be a back up as Angus is patently Ralph's number one moving forward. Ideally i'd like Alex to stay and we have two very good GKs competing but he probably feels that he has a better chance to play for England elsewhere.

OK, I see. It's just that I've seen the odd comment over the last season where people suddenly want to see the back of him like he's Tommy Forecast's no-talent twin brother.
