If he stays fit, he'll be a real asset. That's the gamble from the club's perspective, but it's one worth taking imo.
In fairness I wouldn't say he is a proven premier league striker. He has only had 1 full season in the premier league. It was a very good season but just the 1 where he played 25+ games.
£20m is steep but I think he will come good.
Part of the deal when we sold all our players to Liverpool must've been to teach them how to sell players for large fees. How much have they managed to get for their fringe players over the last few seasons?
Ings, Solanke, Ibe, Smith, Ward and Sakho off the top of my head. Must be getting close to £100m for that lot, or what they paid for Salah, Mane and Firmino combined.

Even if Danny fails to score a significant amount of goals, which I don't think will happen, he still has enough other qualities as a footballer and a person to be well worth this fee.
Fit and motivated with good players supplying him and playing for a top Coach we could be seeing the player that made Liverpool buy him and get him selected for England with a bit of luck.

And from what I have seen he is a thoroughly decent human being. Does a lot for charity and great with kids. Proud to have someone like him playing for us.
Ings fits just fine into Ralphs’s system or at least what we assume is his system. He’s very good at finding the gap between the defense and midfield and he did it all season for us. And he can of course score if given the chance, too. It’s not like he’s just some kind of oddball specialist kind of player. That’s Shane Long. 
It’s just yeah, the injury history is a big concern. If we were just deciding to sign him up now, I’m not sure I would go for it. Wasn’t sure about it last season, either though I was happy we did because I like him.
But really, that’s all in the past. The contract we are giving him now is a sunk cost. And, as it turns out, he was vital in us staying up. Certainly on the pitch I think he was the most important piece not just for his own goals, but because I think he made Redmond much more dangerous as well. Overall, I suppose Ralph has to be given the credit but I’m not sure even he could have kept us up without Ings. So even if Ings were to never set foot on the pitch again, he’ll have been worth the 40m in transfer fees and wages.

The only issue with Danny is he hasn’t scored two iconic goals for Saints.
In 10 years time we’ll forget he scored 20 goals for us this coming season, but we’ll always remember 7 seconds and Anfield....

Does anyone remember a Ted McDougal goal scored for Saints? I can remember a Phil Bowyer goal against Forest and that is it.

Away to Blackpool in the promotion year (I think) first goal for ages and spent rest of game singing super Mac's back not sure he scored again that season.
No I can't, now you mention it. Boyer opened his account with two goals in a 3-0 win on September 10 1977 - I put my new born baby boy into his cot to sneak off to watch it on MOTD! Also remember a superb strike from Boyer into the Kop end the following season in a 1-1 draw. It was Boyer, wasn't it, not Bowyer - didn't he play for Forest?
