We'll see how the proposition is received by the EU, but given it's the paymaster Germany proposing it, I'd say there's a fair chance it will be enacted

We all have been sucked in by pure propaganda on all sides of arguments that the media put out to serve a purpose. That's why, in my opinion, this country is just as corrupt as the next.

Says she has 26+ Labour MPs prepared to vote for the Government’s orderly Brexit deal - thereby potentially offsetting the hard-nosed ‘no dealers’ in the Blue corner - but would reluctantly support a Hard Brexit over remaining. A new PM would be an ‘event’ in EU parlance so may allow for some movement in May’s proposition. We’ll see, of course.

Haven't seen Marr yet, but that sounds positive. The fact is, if the EU can accept a technological solution to the Irish border, which we know they're working on, then the Brexit deal will go through, and the Tories and Labour will save themselves an electoral pounding by Farage and the Lib Dems respectively.
Are the laws not passed by elected parliamentarians, and if enacted at EU level will require that The EU Parliament votes on them too? You may remember that you voted in an election for this parliament a couple of weeks ago. So it’s not authoritarian, in the sense that it’s imposed by a government with no assent from the people’s representatives. This is the kind of crap you get in Parliamentary democracies.
UK representatives will either get the chance to vote on them, or not if we actually leave the EU. If they vote against but are overruled by a majority bad luck, that’s the way it works, cf Brexit Referendum.
Of course it’s a **** law. I would advocate that burning flags should be a sponsored sport, and doing away with the things they represent a matter of urgent priority.

There's no point in their being in the Labour Party if Flint and her pals are prepared to go against the wishes of the vast majority of Labour members and voters to prop up a Tory government.
You highlight the problem with the EU. For Cologne, as a German citizen, it is quite appropriate for someone who disrespects a national flag by burning it (even if they have paid good money for it) to be arrested, fined and imprisoned if they cause a disturbance. On the basis, presumbly, that it's disrespectful, could cause offence and lead to disorder on the streets.
But that is contrary to our culture. I don't think that much of flags or flag burners but bringing in the criminal law through the EU is a one of the many reasons I'm not comfortable being part of the organisation.
So no actual response to the fact that this is a stupid, but democratically arrived at law, the ‘authoritarian’ tag is bullshit. Your problem is that you don’t like the EU. We knew that. I don’t know why you need to reinforce it. Your problem is the failure of a British, sovereign government and Parliament to deliver.
Everybody loves free speech until they get offended by what someone else says. I am intensely suspicious of sweeping statements about ‘culture’.
The UK parliamentary members would probably have been outvoted had we stayed in. Parliaments can produce authoritarian laws. Adolph Hitler was voted in democratically.
I'm not making this statement as someone who wants to bring about Brexit, because hopefully, that will come about. I may not have a horse in the race but I can still comment on the way the EU may be headed.
I have no problem talking about British culture. Different nations do have different cultures based on their histories. Germany has great sensitivities after National Socialism. Their laws suit where they are. But a spread of those laws to the 27 may not be appropriate.
Now Tory MPs preparing to let Johnson be PM for one day before supporting a vote of no confidence in his Government to be called by Corbyn which they will win. As Johnson has now lost his lead over Corbyn amongst the general public the Tories might dump him before an election.

On a serious note, burning national flags or those that belong to a group of countries like the union Jack, should be frowned upon. Saying that, anyone who wants to burn a flag either, has too much time on their hands, is a pyromaniac or just a dickhead!
Agree with all of that, and there must be other laws available like acts that can endanger life, arson etc. But making a flag so precious that burning it is an offence punishable on its own with fine or imprisonment is too far, if you ask me. Just my view
