You have to be at a certain level to qualify for the CL Final. Europa League is a trophy which is all well and good but the bigger picture says CL finalists are in a much stronger position.

Would Liverpool have had a worse season than Arsenal if Spurs win the CL and Arsenal win the EL? Nah.

It's trying to compare two different things though. Liverpool have had a better league season than everybody bar City, that is fact. As for the rest, Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal, their league form has been pretty even, as there's only two points that separate three places.

When it comes to trophies though, it's about winning them. Yes the CL is better than the EL. But if Spurs lose, then whoever wins the EL will have had a better season than Spurs as they'll have a pot to show for it.

I'd much rather be in the CL, but we ain't. So the next best is winning the Europa League and getting a place in the CL.

Sure losing a final is not much fun.

But you never know if you're going to be winners or not just like every cup final. Therefore I'd much rather be in the top comp and lose the final than win the Europe Cup.

If you gauranteed me a cl final place next season or winners of the europa Cup I'd take the CL final all day.

Everybody would rather be in the CL, that just goes without saying. But I'd rather have a trophy to show at the end of the season than not.

One of the things Arsenal used to get criticised for was finishing top 4 and being in the CL, but having nothing to show for it. So, in the last few seasons, whilst we've dropped out of the top 4, we've won the FA cup three times, got to a Europa semi final and now have a chance of winning it.

So what's better here. Top 4 with no trophies, or no top 4 but with a handful of trophies ?

Well next season's CL final, that's obvious. But that's a different question.

Losing the CL final or winning the EL final ? I'd take winning a pot over losing one every day of the week.

Winning the EL isn't a failure, just as winning the Championship isn't or winning the plate in a Rugby 7s tournament. But you have to have failed relative to the CL participants to be in the Europa in the first place so winning it can't be held equivalent to doing well in a trophy which is open to all.

That begs the question by assuming that all 'pots' are the same. I'd rather have the silver medal in the Olympics than a gold medal in an event which excludes all those qualified for the Olympics.

No, it doesn't. There's a clear difference in the prestige between the cups. But we're not talking about the CL vs The Norwich Hospital cup here.
