Finished the 2 series of Secret City !. It's pretty good and makes you wonder what actually does go on in the political world that we never knew about !
I love most of them to be fair. I thought White Bear was the standout episode of the first series, but it’s really grim. I should have said in my first post that the downside of San Junipero is that it’s so widely lauded because it’s so different to the other episodes in being happy so it might not be the best starting point either.
San Junipero is easily the best ever episode, but is one of only two or three episodes that actually has a 'good' ending. If you want absolute misery, Shut Up and Dance is ****ing perfect.
Largely agree, and it’s telling that one of the other two episodes I recommended also has a ‘good’ ending when most don’t. For me though San Junipero’s ending is absolutely not the unambiguously happy ending that many people online seem to think it is, it’s philosophically complex and kudos to you for calling it good rather than happy. The entire series is clever, at its worst too clever for its own good, and one thing I particularly liked on USS Calister was how it took a particularly grim theme from part of the old Christmas special and twisted it into a much happier outcome, whilst still not being happy per se. So for all that the episodes are all stand alone they mainly fit into a broad recognisably near-future world that has an internal logic to it that carries across episodes. Bottom line for me is that I might not love every episode, but it’s always genuinely thought provoking in a time of too much mindless ****e.
San Junipero's ending, at least from the Yorkie's and Kelly's POV, is an incredibly happy one, but definitely the context around the whole system makes the episode philosophically and morally ambiguous and as a result it takes away a bit of positivity. I'm looking forward to the new Twilight Zone reboot with Jordan Peele, he's a superb storyteller as Get Out and Us have shown and I think an anthology series like Twilight Zone is perfect for him.
Narcos is decent, but there are a few other series I think I prefer. I think the most recent season, although good, wasn't anywhere near as great as the first two. IMO nothing has compared to Band of Brothers.
