The following must be considered:

• the movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand)
• the distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball)
• the position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an offence
• touching the ball with an object held in the hand (clothing, shinguard, etc.) is an offence
• hitting the ball with a thrown object (boot, shinguard, etc.) is an offence

 

My thoughts are that VAR is still ****e, the ref should be making the decisions real time. I watched the slo mo vid of the incident and am unsure as to whether he keeps his arm in that position intentionally, the shot is fairly close to the player who turns his back and cannot see the ball so is there intent? I can't make up my mind so watch it real time and then it doesn't look like a pen.
I can't stand PSG and have no love for Utd but if I try to be unbiased I'd go no pen.

Same here. It’s in the ‘I’ve see them given’ category; but it was a very generous decision. If you’re a Utd fan that is..

I don't really see any issue with it. You can not give any benefit for a player turning his back or else everyone wanting to block the ball will just make themselves big and turn their back and use that as a reason for no penalty.

I think for £30k+ wages a week a player should not be turning his back when a shot is aimed at his goal.

The main issue is that refs are not consistant with their decisions and i think something like Lineker said last night that if the ball hits the hand/lower arm anywhere its a free kick/penalty. at least it would be black and white and everyone would know where they stood.

 

I am under most circumstances, but in this case it didn’t give a clear answer one way or another.

I guess some decisions will always be subjective, whether they’re given in real time or after a VAR review.

 

It's just adding different taking points. If there was no VAR we'd not be talking about this as in real time most fans would say no pen.

 

It’s worth it no matter how long we have to wait for a ref to get the decision wrong anyway.

 

So basically the ref makes the mistake via VAR.

 

As I just said, some decisions will always remain subjective.

Did he deliberately leave his arm there? Did he deliberately block the shot with his arm?

My view was that on balance I would have given the benefit of the doubt to the defender. The ref last night obviously took the contrary view.

 

It's almost like some said this would happen.
