Life in Donald Tusk's EU. Hell.
Cycling round the corner- I'd give him that.Who are the elected bureaucrats who are participating on our behalf in the negotiations with the EU over Brexit. We know for certain that it is not May, or the Brexit secretary from time to time who are drafting the text of the proposed agreement. Nor is it any of the ERG or Boris Johnson. He's far too busy jogging round the corner into view whenever the opportunity arises
Sorry, Yorkshire, but life is too short to read and respond to long rants. If Raving has the discipline to set out succinctly the points he wants to make - as I have done to him - then I'll respond. If not, faced with a page giving the history of the world, my eyes glaze over and I move on
Calls For Naz Shah And Anna Soubry To RESIGN As Expenses Revealed

People are calling for Conservative MP, Anna Soubry and Labour MP, Naz Shah to resign after finding out how much their expenses were.
mpsexpenses.info shows how much each MP has claimed in expenses and even allows you to see individual costs, such as coffee machines (this was one of Diane Abbott’s expenses).
Despite earning around £77,000 a year, MPs still claim on average tens of thousands of pounds after staff and travel costs.
Remain and second vote campaigner, Anna Soubry claimed in total between 1 Oct 2017 — 30 Sep 2018 an eye-watering £198,820.76.

Minus the staff and travel costs, which totalled £154,999, Mrs Soubry claimed an astonishing £43,821 of taxpayers money in expenses.

You’d imagine that a Conservative MP would be far less enthusiastic to receiving government handouts. Jacob Rees-Mogg, for example, has led by example and only claimed £900 after staff and travel costs. Both Rees-Mogg and Soubry are backbench MPs.
Moving onto Labour MP for Bradford, Naz Shah.
Mrs Shah claimed in total from 1st October 2017 and 30th September 2018 £210,586.71. £11,766 more than Anna Soubry.

If we take away the travel costs and staff costs which total £155,529 we are left with £55,057 in additional expense claims!
Once again, far higher than Jacob Rees-Mogg’s £900 and Soubry’s £43,000.

Mrs Shah claimed more than double the average national wage in expenses excluding travel and staff! Unbelievable!
I’d love to be able to claim my travel costs I think the whole country would? So why on earth do these MPs get to? Surely NHS nurses and doctors should be able to claim back their costs of getting to work
I think that it's reasonable that MPs travel expenses between their constituency and Westminster are paid. This is fairly standard for a job that requires travel between two office locations that are a good length apart. As I understand the IPSA rules, an MP doesn't get paid for their commute from their London address to Westminster.
Expecting, for sake of argument, a Scottish MP to pay for their own travel to and from Glasgow to London each week would be unreasonable - and a barrier to entry to those who have had a more modest upbringing / previous salary.
Won't comment on the (seemingly large) expenses once travel and staff are taken out in the two cases highlighted, as no idea on the detail behind those costs.
Isn’t that the point though ? I’m sure the majority wouldn’t mind MPs claiming for travel and a reasonable meal allowance when away from home.
It’s the other more lavish claims that I think pisses most people off.
They’re as much a bunch of ****s as those in the EU.
See Kiwis questions in his last para, which I was replying to. Think we're in agreement.
1000 pounds a week in expences after travel and staff costs
not bad on top of your wage
She's probably milking it before she gets deselected...
Sorry what I meant was your last bit about not commenting on the other expenses.....surely that’s the main point ?
But yes mate, we are in agreement.
Oh, sorry, with you. At first glance it does certainly look high, but I just would like to see the details of what it was spent on before rushing to a judgement.
Not convinced that it's right to hold up Mogg (or any other MP in a similar situation) who is born into wealth and can afford to pay all costs from his own pocket as the 'ideal'. We need a system that allows ordinary people to become MPs and pays fair expenses.
Will see if I can dig out the details on Soubry.
Ha, it was what, 600 words? Half of which were quoting your own words back to you. I don't for one second think you're unable to engage with that many words, but it's an awfully convenient way to get out of a conversation that wasn't going well for you.
On the wider point of Tusk's words [and I agree entirely with Goldhawk that he is a very influential man], whether he is right or not, I don't think it was a helpful thing to say. I'm unclear as to what he was trying to achieve. If I were a Brexit supporter, I'd be gagging for a 2nd referendum as I'm convinced leave would win by a very significant margin.
didnt he like peasIt was a long rant, repeating all the posts between us. I understand you found it cathartic, but judge by the reaction of other posters (Ellers and Staines) who greeted the length of it with exclamation marks. You were trying to convince me that Honest John's reputation has been wrongly tarnished, despite the fact that he went down to the worst ever Conservative election defeat AND you rightly pointed out that the electorate did not know of his affair with Currie at that time. And you said that if they had known, he would have had to resign. So you haven't persuaded me. If you want to have another go, fine, but please, try to be concise.
not much in the way of austerity going on in mps households it seemsShe's probably milking it before she gets deselected...
To be fair, they are all at it......

Sky reporting Tusk and other EU leaders have said they think Corbyn's suggestions sound promising and could be voted for by the UK parliament, but that May has come with nothing new. I reckon a good half of May's own cabinet would support Corbyn's suggestions too, especially if they could present them as their own proposals, but suspect May is too stubborn to hear them, yet at least.Interesting move by Corbyn yesterday, offering to back May's deal if she commits to, amongst other things, a permanent Customs Union. If she agreed, this would get a majority in Parliament and we could all move on. But she won't of course, because the Tory party is more important to her than the country.
What, peas with Currie?
Ah, with you now, Spitting Image!
