wouldn't you rather be a brash yank blustering about the place expecting to be adored like the god you are rather than a mere eu citizen.

Anyway... where in the EU would you be going bar on holiday.

I liked the options available to me with a EU citizenship. I might return to Europe some day. I've been in US for over two and a half decades, I'd like to try something new. If I didn't have kids chances are I would have tried a new country by now.

Maybe Germany? Maybe Spain? Who knows. Currently stearing my kids hoping they will learn German for University. (Cheaper to send kids to Germany for University, even accounting for twice annual flights than to let them go here in US). Many German universities teach their classes in English, but to live there some understanding of language is useful.

If I get Hungarian citizenship my kids automatically become eligible to apply for citizenship too. Technically they don't need me, all you need is documentable proof of Hungarian ancestor. EU citizenship could become a benefit if they end up studying in Germany.

I've often non-seriously considered moving to NZ or Australia too. I'm not set on living out the rest of my days in the US and over time my wife has really opened up to moving too. Probably wait for kids to be out of school though.

It's unlikely I'd live in England again, but my British citizenship isn't going anywhere.

Trump is pretty scary, but he's only in charge for one term or until he is assassinated or impeached. Not worth moving over.

Having a British passport and citizenship used to be a source of pride. The country famous for its fairness, innovation, determination music and invention. Now you go abroad and you show your passport they look at you with some pity. Poor chap, he comes from a country which has committed collective suicide and chosen to return to little England (or Britain) and the country of the twentieth century, hankering for past glories.

I now know how some US tourists feel when they travel abroad. Not willing to be associated with the country which voted for Trump as its president.

When I heard that Sunderland has voted by a significant majority to leave in 2016, I was flabbergasted. And when I saw Nissan workers celebrating loudly the result that same night, I thought that the world had turned upside down. By any logic, Nissan workers would have voted to remain. Not only because the cars they were producing were mostly being exported to Europe but also because their owners and top managers had pleaded with them to vote remain, after explaining to them that leaving the EU might threaten the plant.

I then knew that many people had no understanding of the impact of Brexit. No sane worker will put his own job and his family at risk for ideological reasons. They had to believe that Brexit had no impact on trade.

They all believed the lies about trade with EU “will carry on as normal, we will have trade opportunities with the rest of the world and the NHS will have massive investment “. I also saw the point made by many that the consequences of the referendum was too complex to explain to many people as they had to trust predictions and projections. People were bombarded with so many stats from both sides, They had chosen to trust their gut instinct and the more vocal politicians like Boris and Gove.

The rich tories have spent 30 odd years dripping the idea that the working class are poor because Europe steals all the money and gives it all to Spanish farmers and that Turkish people are going to arrive and steal their jobs as well (the irony that Turkey has moved further away from acceptance and wanting into the EU since the ref)

And they bought it, the turkeys well and truly voted for Christmas. Its because of the EU that countries outside the common market pick the UK to have factories as it gives them access to the rest of the EU states. Of course companies like Nissan are going to take those investments away if there is no benefit to having them in the UK.

Its a classic case of rich people telling poor people whats best for them, when in reality it'll only benefit the rich and **** over the poor.

I think its a little of both.
Some who have a sepia view of the 'glorious empire', unfortunately in reality Working class people were extremely poor in the empire. They also have a view that before joining the EU Britain was getting along roaringly, but conveniently forget the strikes, the blackouts, rationing, rubbish collecting in the streets etc.

There are also lot of foreigners with the view that now they're in the door should be shut behind, specifically those from non-Eu countries. Where I used to work there was a large Pakistani community, established back when the empire was invited to come to the UK and they really hated the new Roma/Slovak community which had moved into the area in the past 5-10years because of EU free movement.

Don't know how common it is but I know some people who came to the UK from non-EU countries who were pro-#brexit. Their attitude was they had to go through a lot of beaurocracy moving here so why should EU foreigners have it be much easier to move and find work.

Ha! Makes me think of my parent's next door neighbour. Seems like a nice guy most of the time. He's black but seems to have selective memory of what his race went through.

He has many times complained about Latino people and made comments like "I don't want them moving into the neighbourhood because they cause property values to fall"

(Exactly the kind of racist drivel whites said about blacks 30 years ago).

Nissan is going nowhere. They've been in the newspaper around here every couple month for the last decade, crying about something that's going to make them leave, Washington. The Washington site is one of the most successful that they have, it's not going anywhere and people aren't losing their jobs. This is more posturing from Nissan to try and get more things swinging in their favour. Our government usually do relent to them.

One of the factory workers got asked by a reporter about NIssan potentially leaving. His response? 'Well let them go' People have had enough of all this bullying and scaremongering by the EU and big businesses. The lads are willing to give up their job to find another one if it means Brexit goes through and we are an independent country, again.

My company has helped change so many lives in this area but by being in the EU, my company/industry is now at risk and I may very well be out of work soon. If we weren't in the European Union, I wouldn't have this worry. People in this area are seeing all this going on with me, we voted 60% leave last time, I reckon that would go up to 80% if the voted happened, again.

Why though? I've always been a fan of outdoors, good weather and solitude. Most of Australia have that in abundance. Plus, whereas, I wouldn't see lack of English as a boundary to moving, the Mrs. would... And Australians almost speak English so the Mrs. would be up for that.
