Really good news we’re singing these players down to long contracts nice and early. Totally diff to Arsenal’s approach.

Trent Alexander-Arnold signs new long-term Liverpool contract


Trent Alexander-Arnold has signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool.


An Academy graduate who joined the Reds at the age of six, Alexander-Arnold committed his future to his boyhood club at Anfield on Saturday.

And the full-back told Liverpoolfc.com of his delight at doing so shortly after putting pen to paper.

“I’m ecstatic and really proud,” Alexander-Arnold said. “I feel privileged to have the support and the trust the club has in me to offer me a new deal.

“There was no doubt in my mind to sign and extend the years I have with the club. Hopefully we can achieve a lot of success in those years.

“As soon as they offered the contract, there was no hesitation whatsoever. The thing that made it easiest for me was having the people around me to make sure I was able to focus on football as much as possible and get the deal done as soon as possible. That is down to my brother especially, my manager, who took that role and allowed me to focus on football and not get distracted, which is the main thing.

“The last 18 months especially have been very special. Hopefully the next 18 months and even further on than that will be even more special.”

The 20-year-old has progressed rapidly since making his senior debut in October 2016.

Having established himself as a regular in Jürgen Klopp’s side he has, to date, made 67 first-team appearances for Liverpool, scoring four times.

Alexander-Arnold has also earned international recognition at senior level and represented England at the 2018 World Cup. He has won five caps so far, and netted his first goal for his country in a 3-0 win over the United States at Wembley last November.

The Scouser, who last signed terms with Liverpool 18 months ago, becomes the latest member of Klopp’s squad to pledge his future to the club.

Andy Robertson did so earlier this week, while Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mane and Joe Gomez have also agreed new deals since April 2018.

I wouldn't go that far. He's not the standard that we need, which is why we upgraded, but he's ok as back up in case of emergency.
Do you know any of the younger lads would do better? It's all very well watching players at a lower level or in training, but Karius is a prime example of not knowing what you're going to get until they actually have an extended run under pressure.
I'm a firm believer in keeping what you have until you know you have better.

But how do you know you have better until you give them a chance?

Young keepers can get better migs wont.

Also not goalie related but taa and robertson is an example of youngsters given a chance to prove themselves.

We may not know much about them until they break out but I'm sure the manager and his team have a good idea.
If they decide to keep Mig it's because they think that, for now at least, he's the best option. If we have better then I'm sure we'd be seeing them on the bench.

don't want to sound argumentative but that argument is quite easy to counter.

you have a decent young keeper with potential and want to put him on bench but cant get rid of migs as he is on reasonable wages what do you do?

simple, you keep him in youth team as you are paying migs lots of money and cant get rid, so you end up with no idea if he could make it as don't give him the opportunity.

yes i get the argument he stays in youth team as getting game time, but it is a dif level and never know if be good enough unless you take that chance.

True enough but surely the dilemma is you wouldn't learn anything of his ability at the higher level if he was literally "sitting on the bench". Which with Alisson in the 1st team he would be.

thats why you use the caricao cup or whatever it is called and fa cup to see if good enough to step up. we use migs for that and he don't work, so whats the loss.

Agreed. Better than nothing I guess but when the Number 1 goalkeeper is so good it can be a problem. I have no stats here but I suppose it is the reason clubs mainly buy proven goalkeepers.
