Yeah but what does kike mean?

I know this one

It's a Yiddish word from the meaning circle. Full word is kikel or summat

Back in the days when Jewish folk were asked to sign a document and they couldnt read and write they would sign the document with an O.

Everyone else used an X. But Jewish folk refused as it was a cross and to do with christianity.

Not sure why it's a derogatory term though? If you get my meaning. It's a Yiddish word in effect and they chose to use a O

Summat to look into

Yeah I know, I was being flippant. It supposedly started on Ellis Island and developed into a derogatory term. Call a Jewish person a kike in NYC and see how you get on!

I wouldn't anyway mate. Just interesting to read how the words come along.

Just looking I read that there were other ways it could have developed. So Russia etc using the word "ikeys" due to jewish second names. And some tondo with it derived from the name Isaac.

The latter makes more sense as a derogatory term, if that makes sense. It's like the word Paki in that context. The Ellis island one doesn't seem to be used as a piss take in it's concept. But obviously meanings change hence my interest

Well that was a lot of pages to read..

The shortest ban in history.
A history lesson on some words.
Some funny moments.
Plus a few snidey comments thrown in by people who have something to say, but won't splurt it out

Not a bad first thread to read.
