Spot on. He is positive and upbeat all the time, and that's a big part of managing people, regardless of the line of work you're in.

I disagree. A manager shouldn't be upbeat & positive all the time, it's a fake emotion.
Nigel is & as a result comes across, to me, as a little insincere, a little patronising, a little exaggerated & a little excessive. He regularly talks in a supercilious manner that I find irritating & fake.
I do think he's a nice chap, but if **** needs to be said then it needs saying, obviously in a constructive way. By masking over things with phrases like "control the controllables" & "we had a good warm up" he is basically treating his audience as idiots.
Don't they all just have a way of giving nothing away tho ben?
I agree it's a bit irritating but it's him. Or an extension of him.
Must admit I've never heard an in depth interview with him from burnstein. Might give a better picture of him.
If any of us had a Manager who spoke like he does he'd have the piss raked out of him continually. I don't like him because of his manner (& the Blunts & Scunts links). I can't take him seriously because he doesn't come across as genuine, even though he may be. He's like a caricature of positivity, some weird character that would appear in a second rate sit-com
He is doing a splendid job though no qualms about his performance.
I think this is the nail on the head. It's his cloak/mask or whatever and allows him keep business internal.
A lot of his audience are idiots though, Ben. Just listen to RH phone ins or read the comments section of the HDM for confirmation.

When someone like Roy Keane looks up to you and respects you as a leader then I doubt he was a big cuddly softy.
That I can't argue with. We used to have a laugh listening to the post game phone-ins heading home after a game. I tried to call after one game as a wind up but didn't make it on.

Polly thinks always being upbeat & positive is a requisite of a good manager. I don't.
I can only judge him on how he talks to me, through the media (usually like normal people would talk to children) & his past clubs. I just don't like him. Although I can appreciate that he may be a genuinely nice guy.
Roy Keane's a **** & needs someone to stand up to him. I wouldn't add value to anything he says. Jon Walters went massively up in my estimation for calling him out. I like Bruce though & do think he has a rough edge when needed.
I look forward to someone pointing me in the direction of a management book that suggests being anything other than positive and upbeat.

The media tend to be idiots and ask stupid questions. Footballers are full of cliches and interviews rarely have much interest. So I don't know why people hang on every word.
I tried his diet once. Makes your breath stink. Wouldn’t do it again. There’s better out there.
