who are the homeless
are they uk born
are they from the 300000 new entrants per year
because if we can find homes for the new people you can find homes for the homeless

So this is the latest use of the unfortunate as a political football. As always such claims can often backfire as Corbyn's cynical Tweet showing a convicted sex offender proved recently. There has been a large number of homeless on the streets for many years under both Labour and Tory governments, I actually helped out at a shelter about 15 years ago and many I spoke to didn't actually want help offered, just somewhere safe that they could move to and from. No doubt there are many who do want help and they should be ahead of any others in need. Politicians of all hues are frankly the biggest problem we have in this country, they need to put the people they represent ahead of their own greedy self-interest...

So are you too denying the massive increase in rough-sleeping and homelessness under this despicable Tory government, Sooper?

Actually I have two but that has nothing to do with this debate or the fact that every so often you come out with nasty digs.
For your information there are a number of reasons why people become homeless and it has nothing to do with who's in power, in fact Shelter even say "Problems can build up over years". Problems such as mental health, relationship breakdown, has nothing to do with a Tory government. Only the other day A bloke on SKY News said he became homeless because of gambling... Did Teresa May make him gamble? Now whatever you believe...I still find it sad that in this day and age people need to use them. But at least we are not in France as "Twice as many people use food banks in France as they do in the UK" . Maybe that's why those people get on the boats to come here?

if 300000 that are known about are able to find housing then maybe a little bit more can be done to find housing for the ones that are already there
shamefull that any govt lets this happen
its happening under the labour govt here now
it will happen when the tories get back in here
the refugee quota has been lifted here and they will all be found somewhere to live
no western country should have people living in cars etc

as for being an immigrant myself

i applied to come
i had full medical checks including extra ones because i had tattoos
i had full police checks
i was not entitled to the dole etc for two years from the day i arrived
i would not be allowed in had i been or potentially been a burden on nz and its services

dont see anything wrong with that

the people arriving by boat or in the backs of lorries from france should be put on the next train to france
if they knew they would be returned within the hour they would stop trying to get in

It has and the Tory policies have worsened it but there was a big rise under Labour as well. You make it sound like a magic wand will repair it but it's not a simple problem, a lot of it is related to mental health issues, drug abuse and alcoholism. It's not just a find accomodation problem, there are quite a few Labour local authorities that have provided little help in affordable accomodation in the past two decades under both governments. When I lived and worked in Southwark they were offering accomodation in Midlands towns as they had none to offer locally, what sort of answer is that?...

Spot on Sooper. Over the festive season I have spent quite a lot of time listening to the radio and quite a few programs were about homelessness. A few callers blamed the government/austerity but the 'experts' all said there were many factors. One fella lost his job (his fault) and became homeless. WTF has that got to do with the Tories? Yet a few idiots will blame them for political reasons.

I'm not a Tory supporter, so don't pigeonhole me on that one. Read what I said rather than anyone who doesn't agree with you 100% being a Tory. Anyone who thinks Labour is the answer in it's present guise is really deluded...

Anyway, both you and Ellers (a self-proclaimed Tory-boy) have tried to suggest that that Labour are somehow equally, or more, to blame for the scandalous homelessness situation that we currently have than are the Tories, which is arrant nonsense.

Again, I blame selfish politicians in both parties who vehemently disagree with their leadership but don't have the balls to do anything about it, hence the extremes of the party are getting away with it. The centre ground is tumbleweed at present...

The number of homeless more than doubled between 1997 and 2004, so Labour didn't have the answers either. When you try to play politics you don't solve the problem but like your leader you can end up looking stupid...

Even if I accept that stat (where's the corroboration?) it then begs the question, what happened between 2004 and 2010? We know what has happened since that date.

Do you really think that this homelessness situation would be allowed to continue under a Corbyn government?
