I notice a few dead foals (and one died). Must be heart breaking for the breeders. Can't imagine how we would take that. Does "No return" mean the stud fee is lost?
“No Return” just means that the paperwork hasn’t been filed yet. Sometimes people just don’t bother filing to let Weatherbys know that there is no foal and sometimes it is because the mare has been sent abroad so the paperwork has to be filed through that country’s Stud Book before it is passed to Weatherbys.
Thanks Princess. I thought maybe it meant that if the mare didn't take/carry the foal the stud fee was not returnable. Although I can't imagine why anyone would accept such terms
If the mare doesn’t take they’re listed as “barren”. Pregnancy losses are listed as “early abortion”, “slipped foal” or “dead foal” depending on what point in the pregnancy they are lost. The majority of fees these day are on Live Foal basis, meaning only payable if a living foal is produced.
That's what I would have thought. How is live foal defined exactly? Does it have to survive a certain length of time for it to be deemed a "live foal". In other words, if it died soon after birth would the stud fee be lost?
In the USA it is defined as “stands and nurses” but I think the general consensus here is that the foal lives at least 48 hours without any obvious issues.
The Irish are particularly poor on no returns. A stallion often has far more produce than the RoM figures initially indicate..

My 7yo granddaughter, who’s never shown interest, just said “wow nanny” as Cracksman came off the bend. Had to rewind for her to watch again. Mind you Nanny was screaming like a nut job as Frankie threw the reins at him .
