Not for me either but the Sunday Times’ review is 4 stars and pretty glowing.

The new Dr Who lacked, well, anything of any note. Nowt to do with the Doc being a geezerbird and more to do with it being a bit ****e.

I get the feeling that the Kevin Maher review is out of step with most others. Scathing reviews are always more fun than complimentary ones, though.

It was not a brilliant storyline, but think they're trying to build the characters. It usually takes a couple of episodes for a new Doctor to settle into their role - I enjoyed it for a bit of light-hearted Sunday evening viewing, which was then ruined by the wife insisting that Strictly stayed on - although our boy Seann Walsh is still in it.....

I quite enjoyed it. Only for Jodie Whitaker's portrayal though, I think. The old Dr Who was always pretty ****, but I really bought into the re-invented version with Christopher Ecclestone. David Tennant then took it forward perfectly, but I stopped watching the Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi iterations. The stories don't have to be great if you enjoy the performances, and I think Jodie was great.

It was on but I didn’t see it, too busy eating the roast and laughing at my son, who came round for a feast but was barely coherent after an all nighter consisting of a Dr Feelgood gig (featuring none of the original line up, but still apparently entertaining and bluesy), various pubs and after hours drinking at a mates place while they waited for the MacGregor fight to start, which was scheduled for 3.00am but apparently didn’t start until after 5.00. Now the boy has returned home for a long kip.

What is the thing with McGregor? Most of my son's friends seem to be into UFC (he says he isn't, but goes along for the craic), presumably because of McGregor. Seems there was more action after the fight than during.

I agree that the Eccleston and Tennant eras were the best since the show returned. My problem with the show is that it lacks real suspense and scary moments.

Perhaps it’s me looking at it through adult eyes, but my kids long since got bored by it and were rarely scared before that. Perhaps TV, film, online and video games exposes them to far worse now and they’re desensitised to it all?

Back in the 70s, because the effects and costumes were **** they tended to keep the big reveal back for as long as possible, which built the tension more.

Yeah, that was a good episode. Written by Steven Moffat, I think. When he took over the helm from Russell T Davies I had high hopes of more of this sort of quality, but his scripts became overblown tripe. He even ruined the Weeping Angels with later stories about them.

Felt a bit odd going into Waterstones to buy my first comic (excluding Viz - as an aside my daughter’s new local, the Trent House in Newcastle, is where Viz was first put together) for probably 45 years, but finally bought Alan Moore’s Watchmen, inspired by the comics thread, what I have seen of Moore when interviewed and the critical response to this book.

Only a few pages in, but this is a revelation. An anti superhero superhero book where none of the superheroes (except one) have special powers, and all have major psychological issues. Outstanding.

Rorschach is far and away the best character, completely negative, sadistic yet empathetic

The movie isn't too bad but not a patch on the book

Can also recommend Moore's Batman : The dark knight returns

All of the batman movies have been a pale imitation of this book

Just from Watchmen, which I didn’t realise was written in the mid 80s, you can see entire movie careers in advance. The style, darkness, dialogue has been, let’s say it, copied in loads of films, many of them nothing to do with superheroes. Christopher Nolan, well beyond the Batman stuff, owes Moore, Gibbons and the other illustrators a huge debt.

I have bought a Nakamichi blue tooth speaker, I got this one in Singapore for about £60. Sound quality and power for such a small unit is incredible. Battery seems to last forever and you cab charge your phone from it. Will cut out automstically to take a call which uses speaker to hear call.
They are available in UK on ebay etc.
    Bargain
