I like a back three in some matches as we have the WBs to make it work. The down side is having to drop an attacking player to make the 3-4-3 or 3-5-2. Last night was the first time we had our first choice defence and it worked very well. The sideways passing was more due to Preston sitting deep with two ranks of four. For that, a 4-2-3-1 offers an extra attacking player and overlapping FBs to find a way through.

I get that we would give up an attacking player, RER. I'm thinking of last year when Farke was forced to go with a back 3; it worked defensively but we missed a lot of shots that should have been put away. This season have players who can find the net,

I wish I had a good understanding of formations; but, even after reading them and what each has to offer, it's mostly Greek to me. As always, your comments are appreciated.

Hello would have been on yesterday but only got home from it at 5.10am having had a tour of England's B,C and D roads as apparently all major roads were shut. Deciding moment when we hit the bar and ball stays out, if that goes in we win it didn't you score first and win, poor game between two sides who probably can play better. No wonder you dominate passing stats the two centre backs playing keep ball for weeks on end will get you nowhere. Lewis and Hernandez caused us problems in the first half down the left hand side but the first period of the second half was dire. Anyway never mind you get to play at our place on a Wednesday night as well the joy given the transport system in this country those coming best set out now.

Very fair summary and Robinson's shot cannoning back off the bar was a defining moment and all in all a pretty lacklustre display from both teams.
The passing between the CBs winds US up as well and we seem to have a problem with whoever is playing on our right wing and rarely pass the ball to them. <doh>
I won't be tackling the trip up to Preston on a Wednesday evening!!! <laugh>

The booing at the game, was that mainly for the team, or was it aimed more towards Tetty? From him coming out for an interview, what he said, apologising to the fans. I couldn’t hear from the radio where the boos were aimed.

If it was aimed at him then that’s very sad, and I feel bad for him. He shouldn’t be starting 4/5 games off the back of no pre-season. That’s not his fault.

Themaclad highlights that it's a game of fine margins. For once the IFS are on the other side. Had the 'ifs' gone our way in the the first three matches we might be on 12 points now. Preston was probably our poorest play so far and yet we took three points, which is why I'm not overly worried about our poor start. Preston's packed defence also had a lot to do with the poor quality of the match. Leeds will tell us a lot more.

Going back to formations, it's probably more useful to talk about the number of defenders, midfielders and strikers used. With a back four, it's 4/5/1 whereas with a back 3 it's 5/4/1. Assuming that we play with a DM and a CM, the latter means dropping either Hernandez, Pukki or Marshall. IMO, the balance is better with a back four, with a two man pivot and four attacking players, especially as Pukki isn't as good as Marshall tracking back to help the FB. With four, Pukki replaces Maddison with Leitner playing as a deep playmaker. With 3 goals already, Pukki looks to have the potential to replace Maddison's goals over the season without taking free-kicks. Hope so, anyway.

What a sh*t!

He said we played bad for most of the game again!

Unacceptable! He must know nothing about football!

I enjoyed that but tbf we've had a few wonder strikes in recent years. Off the top of my head there's Rusty, Bradders and Howson, and I'm sure there have been others <ok>

In the same game Howson scored THAT goal vs Forest, Wes scored a cracker from further out, looping a half volley over the keeper!

Aimed at the team but Tettey got them going as our play was poor and he had given the ball away for about the 10th time. He looked very ponderous and couldn't get the ball out from under his feet every time he had it. The goal was great and he was honest in his apology though. At least he showed that he cared about his performance and us as fsns and club
