Ok, so these have been around for a while now, but I still see people who actually HOLD the card pressed HARD against the device. The clue is in the name – CONTACTLESS – ie the card does NOT have to actually touch the device to be read and will, in fact, work approximately 1cm (½ an inch) or more away from the device, as they work on a system known as Near Field Communication (NFC).
Next time you use one, hold your index finger under the card and it will still work and if you have Google/Apple pay set up on your smartphone, they work even further away.

Good point. As one of the offenders I will now change my ways as I have always tapped my card on the reader, completely ignoring the meaning of contactless

Thank god you put "Off Topic" so I knew this had nothing to do with this forum, and could just ignore it and not click on it.

Saved me so much time and stress.

Edit- I agree with your view though, I do a little eye roll in the supermarket.

Thanks 1950. You and about 99% of the population - well in England anyway!!! <laugh>
 
I have contactless on my phone but still hold it on the scanner thing as if you remove it too quickly or it's not close enough it doesn't work..


Brilliant for the underground too if your oyster runs low.

I only found out the other day, to my peril, that you can only use contactless 10 times in a row without having to enter your pin code.

Week away working while forgetting my pin was not the time to find this out :emoticon-0136-giggl

Is that specific to your bank? I've probably only been asked for my PIN on a contactless payment a handful of times.
 
Card use in France is not as widespread as in the UK and contactless, whilst not rare, is not the norm on most terminals. They still like to use old fashioned cash and it will take longer here than in the UK before the inevitable cashless society arrives.
