  3. <laugh> I got the grade wrong. That's a Deputy Director post. For me as a Civil Servant that's a huge amount but as you say it isn't going to get the best people. Mind you, in our place our Brexit policies seem to be decided by press officers and special advisers these days. It's "Does it pass the Daily Mail test?" all the time... I don't think most Daily Mail readers actually want that!

I know the civil service inflation pay rises have been zero or tiny with austerity, but do you still get the annual incremental lift within grade? To be honest I don’t understand the variations in public sector pay. I’ve worked in both public and private sectors (big and small firms, and self employed). They all offer different upsides and downsides.

Police are hunting a bank robber who wore a full-length burka and sunglasses to hide his identity during a high street raid.
A CCTV image of the stocky offender released by Leicestershire Police shows him carrying a white handbag moments before the offence at 10.15am today.
The footage was recorded before the man entered a NatWest branch in Oadby, Leicester, threatened a staff member and demanded cash.
Witnesses told police they believe the man was carrying a gun.
However the raider, described as being 5ft 10in, fled empty-handed when staff activated a security alarm.

Boris Johnson was right about burka, says leading imam

Boris Johnson faces mounting pressure to apologise for his commentsLARS HAGBERG/AFP/GETTY IMAGES
A prominent imam has defended Boris Johnson in a row over the burka as Ruth Davidson joined senior Tories in criticising the former foreign secretary.
Mr Johnson faces mounting pressure to say sorry, including from the prime minister, after comparing women in face-covering veils to bank robbers and letterboxes.
However, Taj Hargey, the imam at Oxford Islamic Congregation, said Mr Johnson should “not apologise for telling the truth” and, in fact, did not go far enough. In a letter to The Times, Dr Hargey said there was “no Koranic legitimacy” for the burka, adding that it was “a nefarious component of a trendy gateway theology for religious extremism and militant Islam”.

I vaguely remember a story a few years ago when a wanted criminal evaded capture by wearing one.

  8. We do get increases but they now do most of it unconsolidated so it doesn't count towards pension. I got promoted last year and often get the top mark in appraisals so get a bit of performance pay too.

The upsides are great - my job is genuinely interesting and I've worked on a few brilliant policies over the last 30 years picking up skills I never thought I would. Put it this way, when I left school as a snotty nosed 16 year old I wouldn't have dreamed that the EU would be asking me to chair a UN meeting on its behalf!

I've never worked in the private sector so cannot say I'd get more cash because I don't know if they'd employ me. It's all good!

If you have a job which genuinely engages you on a regular basis (none will do that all the time) and rewards you well enough to give you a standard of living you are comfortable with, it’s a result.

I did the Civil Service Selection Board for executive (I think) grades in 1982/3, the two sets of written tests in Wandsworth town hall, 2 days of interviews and group work somewhere on Whitehall (including chairing meetings!) and the panel interview with loads of ethical questions (which took place at the Admiralty on Pall Mall). The fact that I can remember it in detail shows that it made quite a big impression on me. As a result I was found unsuitable for all of the departments I had ticked In the application form except the Foreign Office (which I hadn’t ticked at all) for which I was invited to take more tests (I think because I didn’t have a language at A level) and the Hong Kong Government (which had bought into the process for the second and final time that year). I figured out that there was a strong feeling in the Establishment that I should be encouraged to get out of the country, and took the advice and went to Hong Kong, which happily paid a lot better than the UK civil service and had sensational benefits. Led to an interesting journey for the last 35 years and a chronic addiction to travel.

A good reason to pause immigration from certain Muslim countries until the current intake is integrated. Problem is, second generation can be more militant than the first
