Positives
  • from what i saw, yoshida looked like our best centre half and looked pretty sharp
  • gabbi, austin and long all looked like a threat when they played
Negatives
  • midfield wasnt protecting the defense very well
  • defense was pretty poor all around

Now that pre - season is over can a clever bod set up a What position in the league Prediction thread? I'm voting 15 - 17.

Vestergaard looks a good player and he is obviously going to lead that back line which is encouraging, we were so leaderless last season. It's going to take a few games I think before we see the benefits of that though.

Midfield let us down this game I think, They weren't really able to compete.

Hey Ho, 3 goals and all were preventable so things to look at and work on over the next week. pre-season friendlie nothing to get worked up about.

Negatives

We could learn something from their midfield today. They protected the back line well and made it difficult for us to break through. But once in possession they moved quickly up the pitch allowing the forwards to make some penetrating runs. The result was that we looked outnumbered all over the pitch.

The much better side win but as you say there were a number of positives.

Given the quality of our defenders I would rather they just kick the ball into touch rather than try and be clever and play it out.

Its fair to say that Romeu must start, we can't leave our back line that exposed.

I just didn't get the impression last season (albeit only a small sample size) that Hughes fancies him.

And to be fair to Hughes, Romeu last season was a shadow of the Romeu from the season before.

Well...that went well. I’m sure I heard some booing at the final whistle too which is pathetic.

That was really bad. Starting to regret buying those Burnley tickets...

I thought Elyounousi (not even gonna look that spelling up) looked good. Maya has to start. Gabbi got in good positions and then missed some easy chances (even if one was offside!). Erm... running out of positive things I could say. Oh, they gave out free bottles of water after. Yay.

Defensively bad. Midfield useless and no forward drive. Forwards okay, but not in any way frightening. We still don't transition well enough from defence to attack. Lemina could not be bothered - and played far too far forward first half.

I did enjoy the German fans though. Fantastic rendition of Wonderwall was followed by a hilarious "it's coming home".

Don’t understand all this “not match fit” bollocks, all the players have had a full pre season training camp , and the ones who were at the WC would of been training everyday and playing 3 games minimum in the group stage (if they featured) and even if they didn’t start the game they would of been match ready. The only excuse for me that a professional player wouldnt be match fit is if they’ve been injured or out for a extended period of time for whatever reason. Fitness can always be improved of course, but there’s no excuse for any of our lads not being fit enough to play against Burnley, none.

I really couldn’t be more disagreeing with you. There really is nothing like playing a competitive match. “Match Fit” should perhaps be called “Match Speed Ready.” All the training in the world is good, but it’s not a competitive match.

And before that he was training everyday and playing at a WC whilst the others had not even started their pre season. He will of had 2 weeks pre season back at saints before Burnley , unless he’s been racking up lines and drinking 8 packs on the daily on holiday, he’s more than fit enough to play.

Do you play a sport, any sport, even darts or snooker? You need to get your eye in. You need to get a feel for the actions you do under a real match situation. The only way to do that is to play competitive games. Every Sport is the same.

Ignore the word “Fit”

It is why I kept saying players need a run of games. You need to get up to speed to be at your best. It is why at the start of any season I say the bare minimum of games we should play before making judgement is 6, but I prefer 10.
