I think you are confusing republicanism with nationalism, so let me spell it out for you.

Republicanism - a political philosophy which, since ancient times, has been predicated on justice and equality, and the rejection of tyranny.

Nationalism - a form of populist identity politics dependant on the encouragement of petty tribal loyalties. See also racism, fascism.

I suspect most people who support the SNP are like me, they see an independent Scotland as the first step on the way to a Republic.
