He was worse because he's not overly good at football, and it showed. Hence his banishment under Hughes, and going from being our record signing to being farmed out on loan in five months.

That's your opinion. For me the sample of 400 or so minutes of PL football from a newly arrived player in a struggling team devoid of ideas and confidence is not enough to brand him not good at football.

It was enough for the manager and club to brand him not good at football, which is why we're paying a likely-substantial portion of his wages to go be not good at football elsewhere.

It doesn’t matter whether Carrillo is good or not. We signed Hughes, Hughes does not like Carrillo, he is being loaned out and that is that.

If we were rumored to be linked with Gallagher I seriuosly doubt too many people would be happy about it. There’s absolute no evidence he can be effective at this level from either his stints with the first team or on loan. Point the players who came out of nowhere to succeed all you want. The vast majority of players who are no good remain no good.

The “he can’t be worse” argument is stupid as well. You are basically assuming our strikers are as horrible as it is possible to be. If that’s the case why have we not signed at least two strikers? And why are we happy with equal or slightly better than the minimum striker quality possible?

Gallagher needs to be sold or out on loan.

In what way was he worse? You might argue that he didn't score a goal in his couple of matches for Saints, but team performances weren't markedly worse than those with Austin/manolo/Long

Just one example. At Wigan, carillo didn’t hold up a single ball and when Long cane on we held it up better. Shane isn’t Very good at holding the ball up either. That spoke volumes. Just one game I know, but that was the same the week before at Newcastle. He held up nothing.

I do want him to succeed, I just haven’t seen anything either in his time at Saints or his loan spells to suggest he’s a good Premier League striker. I do take the point that he’s 22 and maybe can improve, but I think we need to rely on the coaches here. If he’s seen by then as worth a run of games then I am all up for that, but it is wrong in my eyes to give him a go just because “he deserves a crack.”

Agreed. We should have moved on Corrillio, Gallagher and Long then brought in two new strikers but that isn't going to happen at this late stage.
We will be lucky to see one cut price striker as we are struggling to sell any of the others and falling back on short term, probably self funded loans those not providing funds for new signings.
It shows how far we have sunk in two seasons. Most summers we can't hold onto our best players, this summer no one wants our best players and can't move on our peripheral players

Agreed. But I can understand why people prefer to trust the professionals over internet randoms; in this instance, their reaction to his play was dramatic enough that it's clear the club agreed that he wasn't remotely at the level needed.

Randoms?

:D

I like Gallagher - he's tall, he's bulked up, has decent technique and realtively fast considering his size - and I want to see what he could do given a run in the team. Considering how poor our strikers fared last season, he can't possibly be any worse.

What's your basis for that? No offence but it sounds like a soundbute with little substance to me.

If he stays and is in the mix with the current 3 strikers there is a good chance that we will be having the "is he good enough" discussion again next year as I don't think we will see all that much of him. I've seen comments online of people saying it is pointless to loan him out again, I disagree. I think a loan is the best option this year. Hopefully he can go to a Championship team, be first choice and get 15+ goals, then we might have more confidence in him being an important part of our attack for next season. Another season will have passed on Long/Austin's contracts and they might be that much easier to move on. Loan is the best option in my view, provided we sign another striker.

Well, that also settles the Gallagher discussion, nothing more to be said.

“If” we sign another striker or offensive minded player then we maybe forced to at least loan him out, due to squad numbers.

He hasn’t actually featured that much in pre season anyway to suggest he will be getting any serious chance

It says something markedly different if we're keeping him as our opening day starter, or fourth-string striker, however. We haven't exactly been showcasing him in preseason.

Sorry Schad, I'm thinking that the professionals who coach the team know a lot more than an internet random.

Apparently what they know is that, contra previous discussion, he's not as good as our other strikers, and consequently isn't being played over our other strikers.
