True, there were some great bands pre punk. Punk kicked music up the arse though, thank God. Great times, wouldn't swap it for anything.
I think we were the last generation that really thought rock n roll was going to change the world. It didn't, it was just music, but it felt like a revolution at the time (hence the T.Rex song). Plus, every generation thinks they invented sex n drugs n rock n roll, but ours definitely did it best
Mostly session work. But yes, I’ve stood in with several bands, and spent a short while playing for John Mayall.
It was my life. I knew I wanted to be a musician since about the age of 10 when my Uncle bought me my first guitar. In the end it was the financial side that forced me to quit. I had a wife and two young kids and the work was too irregular and unpredictable. Problem was there were no mobile phones back then. If you weren’t around to take the call, then somebody else got the job. I had some regular work that always used me but in the end it wasn’t enough. I was absolutely gutted when I had to quit. I sold all my equipment and didn’t pick a guitar up for a few years afterwards.
