We will get a trade deal with the US without the foodstuffs that cause problems under EU rules - EU rules which we were one of the most vocal Member States in endorsing I might add. The US is well aware that if we sign up to accept certain Products of Animal Origin we lose our food trade with the EU overnight. Given that such products make up such a small part of the deal we would have with US they will not die in a ditch over it. What you're hearing is nothing but playing to the gallery.
And you'll also find that most supermarkets actually have standards that go above and beyond those required in EU regulations. I had to take three EU inspectors round some food factories a few years back and they couldn't believe the specifications that were being worked to.
just listening to various commentators today and it appears that the EU is trying just about everything to stop this. Already moaning about May's paper although they know what will happen if they reject it. They are treading carefully and need to. They are not satisfied with just the Irish border but now they are bringing up our military in Cyprus and Gibraltar. They should remember that our forces are essential to the defense of Europe. Seriously, the more I listen to these negotiators the more I think that the EU would rather harm themselves than move an inch for us.
When you say "the EU" who was actually speaking? I ask only because the communications machinery across Europe seems to be in as much chaos as ours right now. I wouldn't be surprised if it's sabre rattling from Spain and Cyprus rather than the Commission itself - and we've already heard Varadkar quoted as going off on one about our planes being banned if we ban their fishing vessels. It's getting ugly.
I read about the planes also...... Bit silly as on my understanding it’s not an EU agreement to use airspace ( though I might be wrong) and he can’t just ‘ban’ our planes. adding to that the fact that the vast majority or planes from Ireland use our airspace it all seems rather bizarre
Barnier mentioned it in a press conference. They will be watering down May's paper (at their peril as it will finish her off). Agree this is getting uglier by the day and of course it will all be blamed on the Tories. This bloody thing is so entwined that they make it impossible to leave. Whatever you want to change or discuss they say 'non' as it breaks rule 2 or rule 3. I really see us just saying 'F you' and walking. The only problem I have is that we have not really prepared to walk. We have done nothing in 2 years.
sorry chaps I am now going back to the Politics thread as we now have 2 threads and it's getting confusing.
Don’t think it’s about the airspace Stainsey, more to do with the regulations which allow a lot of flexibility flying within the EU. EasyJet, other British low cost carriers and even BA I think operate flights between non UK cities in the EU, as a part of the Single Market, which also provides easy sign off on safety certification, parts etc, and a single EU regulatory body. If we leave the Single Market we will have to set up our own regulatory body and our airlines would have the same status as US or Far Eastern airlines. As long as the government and the airlines prepare for it far from a disaster. Needless to say Lufthansa, Air France etc are itching to kick out the low cost carriers from internal EU flights. It’s all got very tense hasn’t it? Lots of stupid things being said which just makes things worse.
Maybe I read it wrong Stan but I thought the whole point the Irish PM was making was all about airspace and not allowing British planes to use Irish airspace ?
I agree with you Staines as he linked it to fishing. It was very clearly a tit for tat. And a very stupid one too as nothing will happen on fisheries until end 2020 - unless there's a no deal of course.
Good idea, this was only meant to be for the poll. I naively said 'no need for arguments'. Would a mod please merge this thread with the Politics thread?
Listening to LBC this morning they replayed a clip of May talking to a committee about the EU. An MP asked her a simple question regarding how the tariffs/payments in goods would work for EU/UK....and she bloody could answer the question. Seriously WTF! You couldn't make it up. 2 years and the stupid muppet couldn't answer it. She really has to go.
I'm coming round to thinking we ought to just relax a bit and see how things go. Brexit Lots of hot air from lots of people (not us, the governments, business and politicians) that confuse, contradict and just stoke the fires of social media with unworthy information. Let's let them waffle on for a bit before taking stock of where we are, perhaps? Trump The master of bluster, misinformation, lies and contradiction. What he says isn't for our consumption. It's for the US voter. It's the actions that count, not the empty promises and inflammatory statements.
So where do we stand now? May is committed to the paper. Barnier has basically said it needs watering down. The Brexit mob won't accept it nor the remain. There are nearly the 48 votes needed to get rid of may and will be loads more after the summer. We are finding out daily that the bloody government has not prepared for a 'no deal'. I did like the look of that German woman at the EU. May is looking like she is about to jack it all in.
