Pretty accurate assessment of how far we've progressed, but at least we've done it with players who should still be available for Qatar, as opposed to using players in the twilight of their careers.

You called it FML when you said that you hoped the missed chances in the first would come back to haunt us!!
It always happens. As soon as we missed those type of chances, it looked like every other tournament.

Somegreat realism from batterseacanary and ncgandy late last night on what this team has actually achieved (they’ve done well to get to the semi-final IMO and let's be proud of that achievement), but look at the positives.
We’ve unearthed a star GK and the nucleus of a squad with all the players with the exception of Young still around for Qatar.
I’m HOPEFUL that JM may be added to the squad.

The positive from all of this is English national footy appears to be on the rise. The U17 / 20 / 21 teams onwards are getting it together so bodes well for Qatar and the 2026 tournament in CanMexUS. And as you say @JM Fan we'll have Mr Maddison in the fold next time. <cheers>

The big difference last night was a midfielder running the game.
They had Modric,we had no one.
JM is capable of doing this for us.

David Baddie@Baddiel

Meanwhile, what we lack is a playmaker: someone in the middle of the park who holds the ball and then creates. The wingers are fast and dynamic, but we need a Pirlo. Or a Modric...

There is a young man at Leicester who could develop into such a player, James Maddison.

Exactly what I said!!!!!
Let's hope he soon gets his chance with the senior team. <ok>

Today's offering from Andy Head and I particularly liked this comment -
  • All the South American teams out by the quarter-finals.
  • Germany, Portugal and Spain gone.
  • Italy and Holland didn’t even qualify.
Chances don’t come around like that every tournament. Who knows if we’ll ever have that chance again? I might never see it happen in my lifetime.

There's bound to be one so shall we do our own team of the tournament?

I'll start off with Marcelo at LB and de Bruyne (part of a front three.)
Oh, and Jordan Pickford in goal.
Agree with your selections.
I'd have Mbappe as part of a front three
