Doesn’t normally happen in Rugby, where it’s been used for ages. Normally the video ref tells the field ref what the decision is, and he goes with that.

****ing luddites, go back and live in the trees if you don;t like progress. VAR is simply experiencing teething problems, and the problem isn't really VAR, it's the players and coaches. At the moment it slows down games a little bit, but, in time, the use of VAR will mean the diving will stop, the shirt pulling will stop, the wrestling at corners will stop, every attempt to con the ref will stop, because it will be a waste of time as soon as VAR is looked at. Foul play that only gets retrospectively punished will be punished in the game it was committed in. And then there is the 'homer' ref, who will be able to blame VAR for giving the away team a penalty at OT, or denying a home one.

And, just for the record, American football games now end earlier than they used to as they have perfected the use of VAR, and it's a very different game.

You can add attempting tackles and allowable contact in the box to the list of things it will get rid of.

i have changed my mind on VAR. I thought it was going to be **** but i'd actually have it for offsides that are very close to goals and have linesman keep their flag down unless it's blatantly obvious.

Keep it out for any actual decisions like pennos and **** though

so why didn't VAR intervene when Kane got rugby tackled or Mitrovic a few games later? but they blow up for the **** Ronaldo "elbow" tonight...its not going well so far...

Because the ref will have ignored their wish for him to review it, in those cases he’s made the wrong decision and should have reviewed. The on field ref always has the authority, VAR is there to assist him, not control him.

VAR doesn't "intervene", it suggests to a ref he might want to look at something again. If the ref says seen it and happy with my decision then that's the end of it and we never get to know, if the ref hasn't seen it and looks at the screen then the final decision is purely down to his opinion of what he sees there. That is why most decent refs have made the right call after viewing the video and only idiots like tonight have ****ed up.
I have always been dead against VAR as I believe the game needs to keep some human element (mistakes) in it to keep it real and exciting but, I have to say it is a great help to good refs who obviously can't see every act from every angle in real time.

were the two incidents I mentioned obvious errors on the refs part? if he ignored the VAR assist then either he is a **** ref or VAR doesn't work. if the ref doesn't want to use it then its not worth having. if VAR is only supposed to be used for the obvious stuff and they don't give it or the ref ignores it then its not working.

Then blame the ref, without it he still ****s up. Those who ignore VAR calls that are obviously correct are the kind of weird control freaks that the game could do without, and will no doubt be bollocked and / or sanctioned.

Don't you think this will help refs and their bosses too. If a guy says he has seen incidents like the takedowns on Kane and thought it ok it gives the review board ammunition to reprimand him and make him take re-training, if he says he didn't see it but won't review it they can ask why he chose not to. I think after one season this could weed out a lot of bad refs and help a lot of good ones making the game much fairer.
How many times have you heard/read things from people who have seen umpteen slomo replays from 20 different angles slating refs/linesmen for getting something wrong? maybe when the refs have the same viewing chances they will agree with more of our whinging fraternities opinions.

I'm in favour of VAR ... thought Ronaldo challenge was a pen and VAR ensured it was given. VAR also provided the ref with everything he needed to make the right decision on the Iranian decision - unfortunately he just got it wrong.

My biggest hope for VAR as the tournament progresses is that it is used more and more to penalise wrestling defenders ...I think it is starting to have a positive effect on that already ...

    What, England vs Tunisia?

It failed to prevent a non penalty being awarded, is that what you mean?

‘it’ was never going to mate, but it gave the referee the chance to review it. It also gave him the chance to give 2 stone wallers for us, but he chose to ignore it.

That's fine mate, I'm a Saints fan, we always get **** refs.

I don't think Var will improve them, personally. Makes their job harder, if anything.

    As for that Iran pen....<yikes>
