Sochaux have confirmed that Newcastle have moved for Modibo Maiga while they are in 'advanced' talks for Leeds United's Max Gradel.

The Magpies have been tracking the Mali international throughout the summer and are believed to have offered €8million (£7m) to secure his signature.

Sochaux chairman Alexander Lacombe is against losing one of the club's brightest talents as he looks keep the team as competitive as possible.

However, he has hinted the 23-year-old could depart should a replacement be found and the club are hopeful of landing talented winger Gradel.

Ready

Gradel is an Ivory Coast international and Leeds are ready to accept a transfer fee now rather than lose his services for free next summer when his deal expires.

The former Leicester City man has excelled since moving to Elland Road and is believed to be open to joining Sochaux in order to further his career.

"There has been an offer from them (Newcastle)," confirmed Lacombe. "But my goal is to maintain a competitive team.

"I won't sell Modibo without having found a replacement.

"We hope to finalise the deal," Lacombe added on Gradel. "It's a deal which is at an advanced stage."

Happy?

Maiga... Well, I have faith in Carr.

You have to admit, so far this season, we haven't signed any flops, have we? In fact, each one has been pretty bloody good value for money. I don't see why the trend should buckle now when Carr, Pardew and co have been eyeing this player up for months. It certainly isn't a rash decision, so I expect them to have thought hard and to really see something in this player.

I'll give him time personally. In his very first season as a striker he's racked up 15 goals. We may never find out how many he would have got if he stayed at Sochaux through next season, but he's a good player already and certainly likely to improve.

Might have preferred Roux mind, but hey ho.

I think it's nailed on we will sign him and Santon.

I'm still hopeful of 2 more treats.

Yeah all the players we want to sign the clubs have said we are waiting for our replacement first.

Ah, the old crazy notion of getting a replacement first - who would go in for that kind of nonsense!!

As with everyone else, I'll wait till these potential new signings are stood at SJP holding up a shirt before getting excited...Mind you is Maiga the type of player we should be getting in? The ast few games have shown that we need some sort of pacey outlet up front. Maiga might be a quality player but is he really the type of forward we need??? I hope I'm proved wrong.

No he wasn't, he had 1 really good game for us against Cardiff at home and was average after that. Before we signed him, he was good, but not cracking.

To be fair...Routledge for Crystal Palace was really good! Shame he never managed to recreate that form in his time for us. Watch him have a stormer for Swansea this season lol.
