I've always felt that the people with the power to ban other users shouldn't take part on the forum themselves. It never worked for the Eaves woman or ja606. Every time an argument broke out, those with the power stopped it by eliminating the competition - that's dictatorship.

One forum I occasionally visit to stay up-to-date on tech news (Slashdot) has the best soft-moderation system I've seen.

Mod points are randomly assigned to users with good karma and that gives them the ability to mod up or down comments. Anything down voted by more than a couple of people disappears from the default view.

Receiving more up votes than down votes puts you in contention for getting mod points the next day.


Wouldn't work somewhere like here, it needs a lot of users to work... But you almost never see too offensive comments because they pretty much better modded down immediately.

I use the BBC football HYS's quite a lot and have clicked on the complain option many times due to references to Hillsborough, Heysel etc, the problem with it is there isn't someone acting as moderator in their office at all times, and the offensive comments are left on the thread for anyone with an internet connection anywhere in the world to see for hours sometimes.
Their system is outdated and could do with an active moderator on hand around the clock, alternatively they could close the comments section overnight.

No, I was under my old username but the BBC site wouldn't recognise my password, the "we'll send you an email so you can change your current password" was useless because the email address I used to join the site was from when Telewest cable TV had their own internet email connect to the set top box, Telewest/activemail vanished about 15 years ago.
