Really enjoying this, great to see Wigan giving it a go.

Who said the cup was dead?

I know I’m completely in the minority but I’ve never understood the fascination people have in getting excited by the ‘smaller team’ beating the ‘bigger team’. What’s good about a ‘giant killing’ when neither team means nothing to you?

Soton 1-0, they've been much better in the second half.

It's just the way of the neutral. It's always been that way, anyway, it's always good to see the rich boys take a thumping. Right?

I can't say I have ever watched a game of football as a neutral. Whether they mean anything or not, I always want one team to win. What that's based on varies considerably and can't be explained in one quick post.

Why wouldn't I want the plucky underdog to win? I am watching a game of football, surely you would want the underdog to win? I certainly don't want Southampton to win 4-0 that would be boring.

Nope, that’s precisely my point. I don’t and I don’t know why anyone else would.

What’s good about ‘a plucky underdog’?

They are the least likely to win? It is evidence that money doesn't buy you everything in the world of sport, it gives you hope that sport just isn't a business. Unfortunately sport is emotional and doesn't involve logic at all times, and sometimes the mind works in ways I can't explain and unfortunately only psychologist probably can. I can't explain it logically as it's not based on logic alone, it's based on human nature and emotion.

I also have a couple of clients who play for Wigan.... that also explains a little bit. Anyone who wants to know what a League One player earns, its a lot more thank you think!

Didn’t even know they were playing until this thread. I’ve got no interest or knowledge of either side, or in the result, so I wouldn’t bet on that.

So if this fixture had been played 7 years ago you’d have wanted the opposite result?

    I really don’t understand that.

You are proposing a hypothetical situation and you are asking me to imagine my emotional reaction to a situation, I have no idea. As I said, sport isn't a logical thing, everything we do around sport isn't logical.

But back then Wigan had Premier League riches and Southampton were in League One.

So you want me to imagine an emotional reaction to something that didn't happen and can't happen? Based on you trying to understand the logic behind something?

I imagine the only way to get to the bottom of this is to allow someone to cut open a football supporters brain and analyse it....

You don't need to understand everything in this world, or trying and make everything logical, it's not.

No not really, you said the below and if you wind back a few years that would mean you’d want Saints to win.

Anyway my point is I just don’t get it. Why someone bases who they want to win on the current position in the league ladder is beyond me. I genuinely don’t get the attraction of the underdog, **** the underdog.

And why are Wigan the underdog anyway? They won the ruddy thing recently.
