I remember Ferguson saying the best display he had ever seen from a full back was from Baresi who never touched the ball but orchestrated everything and everyone on the pitch.
Was going to mention those comments I couldn't remember who said it. Thought it might have been Gazza, but mebbe not. Resplendent in his fresh uncreased AC Milan kit, and smelling of aftershave. And that was after 90 minutes! Seem to remember another comment about if he had to make a tackle then he'd already made a mistake. (might have been maldini)
At Maldini’s last ever game the Milan ultras had a large banner saying ‘we only have one true captain’ next to a pic of Baresi. A bit classless - what do you expect of Milan? - but it made their valid point perfectly.
That was Baresi to a tee. Gazza said he was the best player he ever played against, as Baresi just knew where the ball would go and positioned himself there waiting for it. He said he hardly ever saw him run and he came off the pitch still smelling of Aramis. A truly wonderful player, best defender ever for me, and of course an Inter fan who they rejected as a kid
I wasn’t quibbling. If it was an accurate quote I thought that demonstrated even more how good he was, that he could play in a completely different position and still be the best Ferguson had seen. But if you meant centre back, then yeah Ferguson was right.
Talking about state of mind, at the age of 49 and after only around 5 or 6 years of playing, Maldini qualified for a professional tennis tournament! http://metro.co.uk/2017/06/18/ac-mi...n-atp-tennis-tournament-at-age-of-49-6717825/
