A poster called “Ed Rooney” on Saintsweb has just posted

Signed, sealed and delivered” (music video)

He called the Austin signing and the posters there seen to trust him, even if it is out of pure hope and desperation.

Not spending the money could prove very expensive, yes.

Theo would have been less of a gamble as he is a proven PL player. Buying a player making headlines in Russia is definitely a punt imo, but we are now in a position where we have to put some money down.
Is it 'really' a gamble? The player has performed very well in the Dutch National squad; has played in Champions League and won prestigious award in Russia as 'Player of Year' ~ so I suspect that that is not so much a gamble, as more the 'seeking of quality' to improve the Saints squad....... and fortunes!

The key thing for me is him wanting to come. And from what I am reading (which may be rubbish), it sounds like he does. That's a huge hurdle overcome.

So if it just comes down to agreeing a fee with Spartak, then that surely should be workable. Yes we might have to concede some ground, and go closer (possibly all the way to) to their valuation than ours. But we don't have too much choice, both in terms of time left in the window and position in the league. By all accounts, the odd million here or there cost us Toby. Then it cost us getting Puel out the door early on. It can't cost us again. Especially not in the current market.

This. We have the leverage in getting Promes; we don't in getting Promes at our price, because Spartak isn't under any great pressure to sell in this window. We can negotiate all we want, but at the end of the day, this isn't really a choice for us and they know it. They don't need to come down substantially, because walking away from the table on deadline day without a deal would be disastrous for us.

A lot of talk about the offers and how much more we need to pay and we should just do it. All of it conjecture as nobody knows anything other than what they’ve read in the media.

Reading an afternoons posting on here is like reading a very long Chinese whisper.

We’ll know tomorrow if he has signed or not and then everyone can moan that the Board didn’t do it on January 1st, or moan that they didn’t offer the small amount of extra money.

I’m sure it is all just as simple as that.

I think we all know it's not " that simple" , but I'm pretty sure there would have been targets we have missed out on in the past purely because it has been " that simple " to just pay small amount of extra money and we haven't done so.

You can argue it both ways but in the long run the person who isn't willing to splash out will be the loser IMO with the way football is going, you'll just end up getting left behind.

You may well be right.
