He’s good but needs to be more consistent. The performance against City should be the norm but it isn’t.
He does have potential to become a quality midfielder which is why we need to keep him.
We must remember that he’s only turned 24 and had to play in a number of positions due to his versatility. Finally, he’s getting a run at number 6 and he’s put in some very good performances.
He should focus purely on screening and defending, and I think once we have the likes of Keita and another, he doesn’t need to worry about creating.
If he were to leave, it’s not a massive loss but still a loss and even worse if he goes on a free.
I agree with the club about not putting a release clause because it sets a dangerous precedent for potential new signings and existing renewals. However, given how players can easily force moves with and without release clause, it could become the norm and we may have to.
This is the other thing. Players can force clubs to sell anyway now it seems, but if we insert a release clause we an turn around to any club and say his release clause is £50m pay up or go home. If can kicks up a fuss just say to him you signed it, you knew it was there, if that club really wanted you then they’d pay it wouldn’t they? If they don’t maybe they don’t rate you that highly like we do etc
