I believe we would see a lot more of it if there wasn't hugely severe punishments for it. It's a fallacy to believe that humans are intrinsically good, or moral. Whenever society has allowed for it in the past, such as during wartime, then supposedly moral men happily engage in acts which they would not think of otherwise. Society works because there is a threat of punishment, or fear of being socially outcast - especially when you have a career, mortgage and children to consider. Without a threat to any of those I think you would find the likes of rape being a lot more common, as it is in war torn Africa.

Definitely. Though some would argue that societies solution to rape (punishment) is ironic because the idea of rape is in itself simply an invention of society. We are as far as I am aware the only species that differentiates between consensual or forced sex, in the vast majority of cases in nature it would not even arise as a question.
