Raiders or Seahawks?

No I haven't posted this on the wrong board, Spurs have announced that the first NFL game to be played at (New) White Hart Lane will be the Oakland Raiders vs Seattle Seahawks on the 14th of October.

I always said to friends and family that having never really watched NFL before, whichever teams play first at the stadium, I'll choose one of those to officially support. I'll also hopefully go to the game and experience the NFL matchday.

Any NFL fans here? Is it great for you that one of these sides will be playing here or are they a rival? Anyone like me going to begin supporting one of them (or another side) now that we'll be having some form of affiliation with the NFL?

Bad choice for me. The Raiders were the Steelers' biggest rivals in the seventies, till they hit the skids. The Seahawks lost one of the least memorable Super Bowls to the Steleers by two scores, and their fans have still not finished whining about the officiating a decade later. How hard is it to say the Steelers were not quite as bad as the Seahawks that day?

For Spurs fans...well, the Raiders have jumped ship twice (from Oakland to Los Angeles and back again), so I guess that rules them out. The Seahawks are green and blue, both in their colors and their region's political leanings. So that's something. Birds of a feather.

Slowly, details behind the NFL announcement from yesterday are starting to emerge to replace the shocking news that all of our players aren't for sale as we enter into the most important year or two of our club's history.

Lots of uninformed commentary regarding the fact that Spurs only got 1 game in 2018. However, there's good reason for it. Firstly,, the 2 game a year Wembley contract needs to be honoured. It comes to an end in 2020 and the NFL are trialling 3 London games for the first time this year and having them on consecutive weekends gives them more information on the call for a franchise in London.....

Mark Waller of the NFL:

"That's very important [playing three weekends in a row] it was one of the factors to play three games rather than four. We really wanted to test the back-to-back logistics, the back-to-back fan demand and also our ability as a league and a set of clubs to execute consistently at a great level over three weekends."

Waller stated that Tottenham would be ready to host 3 games "pretty soon". I'm guessing next season we get 2 or 3 games alongside 2 for Wembley and that runs for the next three years until Wembley's contract expires.

Then, what about a permanent franchise in London...?

"“There's no decrease in the enthusiasm for London. I think we are ready, we have definitely learned a lot in the 11 years we have been doing this. The fanbase determines whether a market is ready or not and the fanbase here is extraordinary. You could say it’s been an 11-year tease, but various strands would seem to be coming together“

"We’ve proven clearly that the level of support is here from a fan perspective, a stadium and stadium ownership perspective and from a city and government perspective. We’ll get a lot of support if and when we need it.”

So when are we looking at? The suggestion seems to strongly support a permanent franchise @ NWHL in 2022. When asked about this date, Waller said.......

“Absolutely, and that aligns well from a CBA and [players'] union standpoint—that would need to be part of a union agreement. Not to say we couldn’t bargain it separately, but obviously if we’re doing it around that time, that would make sense. And from a media/broadcast standpoint, we’d need to think it through. It feels to me like all the indicators are there, showing that’s still a realistic timeframe.”

The next issue is whether Joe Lewis can get our snout in the trough on ownership? That's where the real money is. The buy-in is £1 billion but the earning potential is enormous.
