That's not how ignore works. You still see the posts and can choose to unignore specific comments, if you want.
He'd see your name and the fact that you'd commented.

 

Unfortunately he's responded early (story of his life) on a different thread to confess that he wasn't really using 'ignore'... otherwise he might just have blagged it out in light of your comments

 

I didn't know how it worked myself, to be honest. Went and put someone on ignore for a minute to test it.
Seems kind of pointless, to me. Guess it works for some people, though.
