Indeed, from what I’ve seen McQueen offers more going forward. I wonder what the future holds for target, he’s been around the first team for a long time now.
I think the question is will we sign another left back when Bertrand leaves in the summer or go with them two?
And McQueen seems to be a more switched-on defender, despite transitioning to the position late. Targett loses his man with unsettling frequency.
McQueen made a fantastic tackle on Rashford last weekend. Had to run 20 yards to catch him up and cleared the ball over the touchline.
Positioning away from the ball is better, too. Targett seems to end up guarding air an awful lot when play's on the opposite flank.
I’m not disagreeing necessarily here, but taking these comments at face value, I’d say these possibilities: If it is Targett who loses his man frequently, why was it McQueen who had to make a 20 yard dash to make a saving tackle? He could have been out of position and making up ground to correct his error. (Not saying he was and not recalling the build up to that tackle) If Targett is guarding air, that doesn’t necessarily mean he is out of position, depending what is happening in play at that time. Depending on the phase of play, i would expect my full backs to be guarding air sometimes. For example, if the ball is wide on one side and the defender had shuffled across from their original positions, I’d want my opposite side full back to be in space (air), and away from any player wide on the opposite side of the pitch to the ball. You may have meant the opppsite (that he stays out on his own flank) Now as I said, I’m just making a comment taking those statements at face value as there is no big picture of any play to visualise your comments, but on their own they don’t necessarily mean Targett is in the wrong. I like them both for different reasons but believe we need better than both at left back.
One good thing about Targett is his aerial ability. I've noticed that when he is on the pitch he becomes the go-to option for goal kicks and he seems to win most of them.
Yeah, I mean that Targett has a tendency to switch off on the opposite flank, with his man getting goalside unchallenged. Wouldn't have a problem with him dropping to the far post if his man stayed wide. And I agree totally that we could do with better than either of them; we cannot sell Bertrand without a replacement. McQueen I think is a capable if not sparkling backup, but I'm not convinced that Targett will be a Premier League left back.
In the past our young players got chances to improve in a good side playing regularly. They had time to make mistakes and learn. Targett has been out for some time and only played sporadically since....JWP has had more time but is not played regularly. Saints are not doing well so hard for any player to shine when the team plays with fear. May be time for his career's sake for Targett to go to a good Championship side in the summer.....we could be surprised by how he turns out given regular play and encouragement. JWP is a Saints stalwart and can do a job for us (and I don't mean that in a pejorative way)....he too could look better in a better side when his skills will overcome the fans' needs for every player to be worthy of playing for a top 6 side.
Oh, for God's sake! Ain't going to happen. https://thisisfutbol.com/2018/01/bl...ol-clear-favourites-to-sign-saints-ace-tadic/
I know....was rolling my eyes at people being so predictable about linking every Saints player with Liverpool.....especially as they have cleaned us out of exceptional players. We have good players, but VVD was the last of our 'starry' players.
Targett goes to Fulham for the second half of the season and then we do some kind of swap deal + cash for Sessegnon in the summer? Nah that's too optimistic. Whats Stephen Warnock up to?
Sky Sources There is firm interest from Southampton in Monaco striker Guido Carrillo, according to Sky sources. The 26-year-old Argentinian - valued at around £15million - played under Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino during his two year spell in charge of Estudiantes. The struggling Premier League club are seeking a target man to play alongside Charlie Austin when he returns from injury. Southampton have money to spend following the £75million sale of Virgil Van Dijk, although the fee is to be paid by Liverpool in instalments over a period of years. As well as a centre-forward, they are also in the market for a winger with pace and a back-up right-back.
"The struggling Premier League club are seeking a target man to play alongside Charlie Austin" - well that's rubbish for starters; why would a forward thinking, free flowing, attacking team like saints need to play two up top?!
It’s the headline that’s hilariously wrong. Liverpool are clear favourites (4/1) whereas it should simply say Tadic going nowhere is clear favourite (1/5). It’s so bad a headline it wouldn’t even make it into The Sun.
