The high level action needs to be an effective deterrent to encourage the 'local' level to mend its ways. While we are beginning to consider taking effective measures to reduce alcohol binge drinking, action also needs to be taken at high level to make those who sell booze by the gallon at barely more than cost price to bear their fair share of the cost of treatment. Is there any reason why alcohol should be heavily discounted?

Chris Grayling couldn't run a bath. When the ECML was run by the state it made a profit, but they couldn't bid to run it.

It really doesn't make sense that our railways can be run by nationalised, state-run companies - but only non-UK corporations.

Big shout out and respect for Oh Jeremy Corbyn, for his principled silence on the way the medieval theocracy in Iran is treating its own people. Given that he has shared platforms with them and made TV programmes for their banned propaganda channel (for payment) it would the height of ill manners to criticise his mates the Ayatollahs. Though he is quite happy to stand up for them against sanctions to dissuade them from making nuclear bombs. Odd that, Jezza seems quite anti thermonuclear warfare most of the time. Except when his anti Israeli pals are concerned.

The inside of his head must be both very cramped and rather confused.

Toby Young, someone who seems to think that working-class people aren't worth educating, to be appointed 'University Watchdog'.

    Good luck with that Theresa.

    He’s a very unhappy man, isn’t he?
He’s a real creep, but I don’t see much wrong with the ethos of the West London Free School Academy Trust:
"every pupil to study a core of academically rigorous subjects, regardless of background or ability, but with plenty of art, music, drama and sport thrown in" "with high expectations, strong discipline and an academically rigorous curriculum, but which is open to all, regardless of income, ability or faith".

Tony Blair going on about a second referendum again. He really doesn’t get how toxic his brand is, the more he talks up about something the less likely it is to happen.

A poll out today says that 78% of Labour members want a second referendum (along with 87% of SNP members and 91% of Lib Dems), whilst only 14% of Tory members are in favour of another vote. Other polls have shown that Labour would lose votes at the next election if Corbyn fails to oppose Brexit. Blair should keep his mouth shut, but equally Corbyn should open his in favour of a second referendum and staying in the Single Market.

But Corbyn doesn’t want to. It’s not the ‘socialist’ thing to do. The only bit of the EU he is in favour of is workers rights and he thinks he would do more for workers as PM of an isolated U.K. If we stay in the EU he can’t institute socialism in one country, the rules won’t let him.

Which is a pretty good argument for staying in.

He may not want to, but the party members that elected him as leader think that he should. I think he will.

Corbyn is more anti EU than Farage. Sadly comrade Corbyn won't make a decision. Probably because people will see him for what he is. What he needs to do is smile like Blair (although he has teeth like Delia so best not) and people will vote for him. As for Blair and 2nd referendum? <laugh>

Your poll figures were for Labour Party voters, not Labour Party members who voted for Corbyn. Plus there are a bunch of Labour voters, especially in the North, who are just as pro Brexit as Corbyn. Will he risk losing their votes? Besides he’s spent his entire career not doing what the majority of his party wanted, now he’s in charge why should he change?

The percentages I quoted wanting a second referendum were for party members actually (see below), but the further point was that Labour would lose support from voters overall if they don't oppose Brexit.

    Corbyn’s Labour:
His pick as party chairman, Ian Lavery, hard left , caught up in scandal about funding for the new stand at Ashington FC.

Clash between Labour Against the Witch Hunt (LAW) which fights expulsions and suspensions from the party for anti-semitism, and Reject Bogus Left Anti-semitism (RBLA) which does the same thing, consisting of ex members of LAW expelled for anti-semitism. Current members of LAW have also been accused of anti-semitism. The groups have been barred from meeting at the same pub (the Calthorpe Arms, where I used to drink after work on the Grays Inn Road. Unless it’s another one) in case violence ensues. Personally I think seeing racists fight each other is a great spectator sport.

Didn't Corbyn promise when he won the leadership that decisions would be made consensually? Or was that his way of saying by Momentum?...
