The French and the Dutch scuppered this idea in 2005 in referenda (meaning we didn’t need to have one). I have a feeling that the EU superstate might consist of Germany and Luxembourg. And perhaps not Germany if the people get to vote on it.

Yes, the Scandanavians and the East Europeans are opposed to integration, but if Germany controls the purse strings...? It's an ongoing issue in the EU

Not sure if the anti EU feeling in many EU countries is actually any stronger than 12 years ago, but it’s certainly better organised and more visible.

I too would like the opportunity to be a dual U.K./EU Citizen and would be prepared to pay for it, but I doubt it will be feasible. Have you been in France long enough to benefit from the citizens rights stuff?

No idea must be close plus had houses here since 89
Friends have a business so will ask them
Up and downs each day with the news anyway
Friend I told you about in an email works inside the EU said all things will be considered re UK cards once the UK get's itself in order ... His comment was the EU will not ignore the 48% who wanted to remain. It's also possibly a very big money spinner. EU passports visas

Fall back plan is to go for the full Frenchie: partner is fluent and i am getting there. She is prepared to sell up her houses in London and so that will do us.

I shall return just to shoplift and catch the Rangers

    Wow!
    That is interesting.
I think that must be the first time in my lifetime that I can remember a poll indicating that the majority of people in Northern Ireland would vote for a united Ireland.
    This is huge surely?

It’s very closely aligned to the nature of the border though and in the context of a ‘hard’ Brexit. It would be interesting to see a similar poll with the question being ‘if the agreement outlined today goes through smoothly, how would you vote on a United Ireland?’. I’d guess there would be a large ‘not at the moment thanks’ majority, which there is (even amongst Catholics) if the question is asked ignoring Brexit.

Interesting though and shows how important the issue is to people.

Varadkar has said that a border poll would require more than a simple majority on both sides of the border to change the status quo. It’s easy to forget that it’s not just about those in the North wanting to join, but also those in the Republic wanting them in.

While I’m not vindictive or naive enough to say that today’s clashes in cities and towns in Israel and Palestine are entirely Trump’s fault, he didn’t make people go on to the streets to protest that was their choice, I wonder if he thinks his little political charade about the location of the US embassy was worth the deaths and injuries it has led to, and whether it has made him ponder the power of the presidency at all.

    I doubt it. Genuinely sadly.

As Stan pointed out, the poll is linked to the Brexit border issue, but still highly significant, I would say. I think Brexit brings a united Ireland closer.

That is a tiny piece of the poll and in fact it may be an older poll as I couldn't see it when I looked.
Here is the full poll for November,

Given that anyone born in Northern Ireland can choose between British nationality, Irish nationality or dual nationality, I’d say they have more choice than most of us already. Good for them, I’m rather jealous.

I don’t expect to see this resolved in my lifetime (unless Brexit goes badly wrong, either politically or economically) but as long as it stays peaceful that’s enough.
