Yet again this morning us Spurs fans wake to see more comments in the press from good ol' 'Arry. This time he tells the press that we were close to signing Mata, Jones, Downing and Ashley Young but eventually were turned down because of wages. Now i know we like to be kept in the loop from our club a bit more but i'm getting a bt fed up with his constant whingeing and moaning about us being unable to sign players because of wage demands. Yes the other 5 have more money than us but I think all but Mata would of signed for us if we had made a real effort. The way i see it is that Harry is trying to pass on any criticism of our transfer dealings to Levy and is constantly undermining him so as to make himself look better to fans. I'm sorry but that doesn't wash with me. I'm fed up of seeing who we could've signed but didn't coming out of Harry's mouth. How is this constructive? A) It makes fans disappointed at some of the unrealistic options we could've bought slipping away and B) Surely it undermines the players already playing in their positions, especially considering we have such a huge squad as it is. Every time he opens his mouth it's a personal PR exercise to big up his credentials and pass on the buck to other vulnerable targets. For instance Modric. I don't know any manager (Bar Holloway) who in the situation we find ourselves in would go blabbing and contradicting himelf over the potential transfer so much when all it does is cast doubts and confusion in the fans heads. Harry has done a fantastic job at this club, but if he doesn't keep his mouth shut and Levy eventually gets fed up of the constant sly digs, I would understand completely if Levy gets rid.
Harry is telling us what we already know. Many people on here talk about attracting top talent. The simple fact is, that top talent is not going to come to Spurs, given our current wage structure. O.k. Harry is passing the buck. But obviously, it must be frustrating for him, seeing players we want go to other clubs who pay more. However, I do agree that he should talk more with Levy, and less with the press. What's even more worrying, will be our inability to hang on to the talent we do have; if the situation is not sorted. Levy isn't stupid, so for all his talk about Spurs being a club consistently challenging for the top honours, he must know that ain't gonna happen if we don't compete on the wage front.
I understand that but personally I think it's something to be admired that we have a wage structure. If we didn't we'd end up with these endless debts that all of the big clubs bar arsenal and us carry. I don't want to win something spending money we don't have or by just simply spend, spend, spend. It's well known our structure is an issue but it doesn't require Harry coming out every other day having his sly digs and telling us who we could've signed but didn't. It's a little childish to be frank and last time Harry was given money a club couldn't afford, things didn't work out too well there. And it's not that i've got a vendetta against Harry like some of our fans do, i've only really been iritated by him this summer and i admire his achievements and will back him even if we are down on form. But the endless comments to the press has to stop
Absolutely. I've always backed him when others haven't but if I'm honest I'd want him out if it wasn't so close to the start of our season. I can't understand why no one at Spurs has told him to shut up, or why he himself can't resist giving information on all our activities. I wish we had Moyes in, no matter what troubles Everton have he never lets the press know.
As I have already said, There lies the rub. If Levy is serious about competing at the highest level, then he must know that that is not possible given our current structure. So, either that has to change, or Levy, and the fans, will have to accept that Top 6 with occasional excursions into the Top 4, is the best we are going to get.
I don't see why it has to be about finance in all honesty. Everton have always been there or thereabouts on a shoestring budget. Our team is damn good and none of them break the bank with wages. I believe you show a player some real loyalty with a decent wage packet and support (in most cases) wage structure needs be no problem. I want players who are playing for glory rather than paying for a higher wage, so if need be and we do have to settle for Top 6 with occasional excursions into Top 4, so be it. I don;t want to see my club sell out and lose its soul
Harry looks silly with his constant chats with the media, which I think gives the club a very negative vibe. At the same time Levy has to up his game , sort out signings , pay better wages and really sort out the stadium. A few days less in U.S.A. may help . Under our El Supremo we have won basically nothing ( poors man's League cup does not count).
You often wonder with Spurs if it's can't spend, or won't spend. It's not a question of "selling out", selling out what, exactly? Everton have done well on a very limited budget, I agree. Spurs, however, are reputedly a far wealthier club. Whether you like it, or not, players nowadays - with the connivance of their pimps, oops! Sorry, I mean agents, are virtually all mercenaries. Very few will stay with any club purely out of loyalty, if they are being offered a better deal, elsewhere. I want Spurs to be the best we can be. I'm not sure that we are currently doing everything we can to make that happen.
Redknapp needs to shut up and do it now. He's undermining the chairman at every opportunity and trying to keep himself in the frame for the England job. "I'm not being given the money! It's not my fault!" He should take a look at the state that his last club's in and see what overspending can do.
Spot on PNP. We've always had fans of Southampton, Portsmouth, West Ham etc... coming onto our baord telling us he's to blame. In the past i've batted off all these suggestions as i had faith in the bloke's credentials but maybe there was abit more than met the eye at Portsmouth and Southampton in particular. if he picks up a win tonight all shall be forgiven of course.
What happened at Portsmouth wasn't his fault GDD, because even if he did influence the money men, it's still their decision to spend. I'd suggest that Pompey was more about Gaydamak making broken promises and Southampton was about their stadium, but he still needs to keep them in mind.
I understand that PNP, but in my opinion I don;t think he's blameless 100% even despite the complete buffonery of the Portsmouth Hierarchy at the time. He should know that having seen it once, clubs have to be more careful these days if they do not carry the power of a Man United or the benefactor of a Chelsea.
I agree with your sentiments Gio. I'm afraid Harry has no class when it comes to spouting off to the media. What surprises me most is that Levy appears to let him have a free hand when it comes to the media. I also get the impression that Harry is miffed that he is not in the negotiations, his constant mantra that the chairman does the deals is beginning to sound like sour grapes. I hope and expect Harry to have a good season with Spurs but if things do not work out that way his support will very quickly disappear.
