Somebody can be sacked for not following the company's rules but the boss is allowed to break the rules in sacking him or her. Hardly seems fair to me.

If you deserve to be sacked you deserve to be sacked, I fail to see why you should deserve a reward too on a procedural technicality. Of course the boss can break his own rules, he's the boss, he can do whatever the **** he wants.
